Position Overview

The Metascience Division

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) is establishing a dedicated Metascience Division aimed at enhancing the methodologies of scientific research funding and execution, ultimately benefiting the economy and society.

This division will play a pivotal role in overseeing UKRI's contributions, focusing on the development, management, and strategic investment of grant programs. The team will collaborate with various stakeholders to identify opportunities for testing and evaluating enhancements to funding processes, ensuring long-term monitoring of outcomes.

Role Responsibilities

This position is vital for driving a significant investment in metascience, providing evidence to inform policy decisions.

As an integral member of the Metascience Division, you will oversee the data requirements, including the analysis of experimental and historical data. You will spearhead the development and coordination of a comprehensive portfolio of metascience research aimed at shaping policy and funding practices.

Key Duties

  • Collaborating within the Metascience Division to fulfill data requirements.
  • Conducting and sourcing analyses of experimental or historical data to support the division's initiatives.
  • Offering analytical support across the organization using diverse analytical and statistical techniques for metascience projects.
  • Developing and managing a portfolio of research focused on metascience.
  • Assisting in the design and execution of applied experiments related to funding processes.

Candidate Profile

About You

The ideal candidate will possess a strong quantitative background. This role is open to all analysts with the necessary skills and experience.

Essential Qualifications

  • Proven analytical experience, including:
    • Data manipulation and analysis, with the ability to communicate findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
    • Proficiency in data analysis using SQL, R, and/or Python.
  • A solid understanding of the research funding landscape and policy frameworks in the UK and internationally.
  • Capability to design, manage, and interpret experimental interventions in complex real-world scenarios, effectively communicating results to decision-makers.
  • Exceptional written communication skills, producing clear and concise documentation for diverse audiences.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with internal and external partners at various levels of seniority.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities and needs.
  • Robust project management abilities, including multitasking and prioritizing tasks to deliver optimal project outcomes.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience in research commissioning, investment, or project management, including effective governance and assurance of project outcomes.
  • Experience in identifying new investment opportunities and engaging collaborators to ensure comprehensive understanding and reflection in proposals.
