Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom University of Cambridge Full time

Position Overview: We are looking for a dedicated full-time Research Assistant to contribute to the innovative research conducted by Prof Simon Mendez-Ferrer in the Haematology Department. This role focuses on understanding the intricate regulation of the haematopoietic stem-cell niche in both health and disease.

Research Focus: The Mendez-Ferrer lab investigates how blood stem cells operate within specialized niches that facilitate their self-renewal, proliferation, differentiation, and migration based on the body's needs. Our research has revealed that the brain plays a crucial role in regulating a peripheral stem cell niche in the bone marrow, particularly through sympathetic innervation of mesenchymal stem cells that coexist with haematopoietic stem cells. We explore the implications of ageing on the risk of developing myeloid malignancies, including myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) and acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), highlighting how alterations in the bone marrow microenvironment can drive myeloid cell expansion.

Candidate Requirements: The ideal candidate should possess a degree in a biomedical discipline or a related field. Experience in laboratory research, particularly with laboratory mice and human samples, is essential. Familiarity with cellular and molecular biology techniques, including DNA, RNA, and protein extraction, RT, PCR, QPCR, flow cytometry, cell culture, and Western Blot, is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities: The successful applicant will support the research team by providing technical assistance across various projects and meticulously recording experimental data. You will be responsible for planning your daily research activities while coordinating with fellow team members to ensure efficiency and avoid redundancy. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to develop your own research project, provided it aligns with your primary responsibilities, which include maintaining laboratory operations, managing supplies, and updating protocols and reagent databases.

Working Conditions: This is a fixed-term position with part-time hours (0.5 FTE).

Diversity and Inclusion: The University actively promotes equality, diversity, and inclusion, encouraging applications from all segments of society.

Eligibility: The University has a responsibility to ensure that all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK.
