Position Overview: We are looking for a dedicated full-time Research Assistant to contribute to the innovative research led by Prof Simon Mendez-Ferrer in the Haematology Department. The focus of this research group is on understanding the intricate regulation of the haematopoietic stem-cell niche in both healthy and diseased states.
Research Focus: The Mendez-Ferrer lab investigates how blood stem cells interact with specialized niches that facilitate their self-renewal, proliferation, differentiation, and migration. Notably, the team has uncovered the influence of the brain on peripheral stem cell niches in the bone marrow, particularly through sympathetic innervation of mesenchymal stem cells, which coexist with haematopoietic stem cells.
Key Research Insights: The lab's findings indicate that aging increases the risk of developing myeloid malignancies, including myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) and acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). The research highlights how alterations in the bone marrow microenvironment can lead to myeloid cell expansion during both premature and normal aging processes. Furthermore, the study suggests that disruptions in niche regulation are critical for the progression of MPN.
Candidate Requirements: The ideal candidate should possess a degree in a biomedical discipline or a related field. Experience in laboratory research, particularly with laboratory mice and human samples, is essential. Familiarity with cellular and molecular biology techniques, including DNA, RNA, and protein extraction, RT, PCR, QPCR, flow cytometry, cell culture, and Western Blot, is highly desirable.
Responsibilities: The successful applicant will play a vital role in supporting the research team by providing technical assistance in various projects and meticulously recording experimental data. You will be expected to independently plan your daily research activities while coordinating with fellow team members to ensure efficiency and avoid redundancy.
Additionally, there will be opportunities to develop your own research project of interest, provided it aligns with the team's objectives. Other responsibilities will include maintaining the laboratory's operational flow, which encompasses ordering and managing supplies, as well as updating protocols and reagent databases.
Work Arrangement: This is a fixed-term position with part-time hours (0.5 FTE).
