Role Description

The Online and Supply Chain Regulation Team oversees the entire supply chain, from importation points to online marketplaces, fulfillment centers, and third-party vendors. Our goal is to ensure that online shopping is as secure as traditional retail.

To fulfill this essential role, we have established two primary enforcement divisions: Ports and Borders, and Online Regulation. We are currently seeking qualified professionals to assume Senior Compliance Officer positions within both divisions.

Ports and Borders Division

Every day presents new challenges in the Ports & Borders Division. Our commitment is to prevent unsafe and non-compliant products from entering the UK market.

Our team implements a proactive strategy to identify intervention points that disrupt non-compliant activities within the supply chain. This includes operations at ports, monitoring fulfillment centers, and targeting resources to address repeat offenders. We collaborate with various regulatory bodies, including Local Authorities and Border Force.

As a Senior Compliance Officer, you will lead operations at ports and inland locations, conducting various on-site activities across the UK while ensuring adherence to best practices.

You will take the initiative in establishing a regulatory activity program and lead significant projects, preparing accurate reports, operational plans, and case files, including conducting thorough investigations to determine appropriate enforcement actions.

Building strong relationships both internally and externally will be crucial, as you will play a key role in mentoring and developing junior officers.

Online Regulation Division

The Online Regulation team operates in a fast-paced environment, ensuring that products sold through online platforms are safe for consumers in the UK.

This team relies on intelligence and data to conduct test purchases of high-risk products sold online. We work closely with other teams within the Department and provide support during national product safety incidents.

Our enforcement activities include withdrawing and recalling unsafe products and taking appropriate enforcement actions, including prosecution. This work informs new regulatory strategies, holding the online sector accountable for the products they offer.

As a Senior Compliance Officer in the Online Regulation team, you will manage a portfolio of cases, lead projects, and present findings to senior management. You will be expected to act decisively, prioritizing actions based on risk assessments.

Your role will involve leading enforcement activities and ensuring compliance post-intervention. You will also enhance your enforcement skills, including evidence handling and the application of statutory powers.

In a rapidly evolving market, you will develop insights into the online economy, allowing for innovative regulatory approaches.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct both proactive and reactive enforcement actions to ensure compliance of products in the UK market.
  • Lead individual investigations and support multi-officer inquiries while supervising your team's casework.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with relevant professional and trade organizations.
  • Provide guidance to businesses to enhance compliance within their sectors.
  • Develop specialized knowledge of the legislation enforced and the industries regulated.
  • Carry out regulatory activities in accordance with the Regulators' Code and the Department's Enforcement Policy.
  • Collaborate across teams to identify opportunities for enhancing regulatory effectiveness.

While preferences for team assignments will be considered, the Department reserves the right to assign roles based on business needs and emerging risks.

Candidate Profile

We welcome applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds who can demonstrate the following essential skills and experience:

  • Experience in investigative roles related to regulation, enforcement, or compliance.
  • Strong strategic problem-solving and analytical abilities.
  • Capability to plan and execute results-oriented, multifaceted work plans.
  • Flexibility to prioritize effectively in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Aptitude for researching and applying technical information relevant to investigations.
  • A valid driving license is required; if you cannot hold one due to a protected characteristic, please inform the recruitment manager.

Behaviors

We will assess candidates against the following behaviors during the selection process:

  • Adaptability and Improvement
  • Efficiency in Delivery
  • Effective Decision-Making
  • Collaboration

Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary, the Department for Business and Trade contributes significantly towards your membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
