Position Overview

The role is integral to the Clinical Directorate of Emergency Medicine.

The successful candidate will assist the Clinical Director in a variety of managerial and administrative responsibilities. All consultants may be considered for appointment to the Clinical Director position.

Key Responsibilities

Collaborate with colleagues to actively engage in the planning, development, and execution of the Emergency Service for the Directorate.

Provide expert input for patient care; participate in multi-disciplinary teams and lead the coordination of care for patients.

Engage in the Consultant on-call rota, ensuring coverage during colleagues' absences.

Maintain a continuous commitment to patient care, ensuring that appropriate arrangements are in place for leave and off-duty periods.

Uphold high professional standards of clinical care through direct patient interaction and ongoing professional development.

Establish strong relationships with local General Practitioners.

Utilize the freedom to develop specialized service elements based on perceived priorities and available resources.

Clinical responsibilities will encompass all duties typically expected of a Consultant in a similarly sized Emergency Department in the UK.

About the Organization

The two Emergency Departments function as a unified Emergency Service across both sites. The designated Major Trauma Centre for the region leads a multi-disciplinary trauma team. Successful candidates will join a robust team of medical professionals providing comprehensive clinical support.

The consultant rota is designed to allow flexibility, promoting a healthy work-life balance. Specific activities related to professional development and revalidation will be included in the contract, with additional opportunities for further professional engagement available.

Numerous opportunities exist for involvement in education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as in research and audit initiatives. The consultant team is encouraged to take leadership roles within the Directorate, fostering a strong reputation for governance procedures.

For those with family commitments, both hospital sites offer nursery facilities.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • MBBS or equivalent qualification
  • CCT or CESR (or entry within 6 months) in ICM and EM
  • MCEM or equivalent Royal College Postgraduate Examination

Experience and Skills

Essential

  • Current ALS, APLS, and ATLS or ETC certification
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing postgraduate education and professional development.

Desirable

  • FICE Accreditation or similar qualifications
  • Instructor status in ALS or equivalent

Management Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of clinical leadership capabilities
  • Commitment to audit and enhancement of clinical practice/service development

Desirable

  • Leadership roles within the NHS
