London, Greater London, United Kingdom Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Position Overview

As a Breech Pathway Trainee Midwife, you will collaborate closely with our experienced Breech Specialist Midwife, gaining essential knowledge and skills to positively impact the experiences of expectant mothers and their families navigating the breech pathway. This role is designed to enhance your midwifery career within a nurturing and educational environment.

Key Responsibilities

The primary objective of this position is to complete the requisite training and achieve the competencies necessary for independent practice as a Breech Specialist Midwife. The ideal candidate will possess a degree or equivalent clinical experience, demonstrate the ability to engage in master's level study, exhibit outstanding communication skills, and work independently. Practical, hands-on training will be a significant component of your development.

During your training, you will cultivate a high degree of personal and professional autonomy, enabling you to make informed clinical decisions and manage your caseload effectively. You will be responsible for conducting thorough patient histories and examinations, articulating findings to patients, and involving them in future care plans.

About Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

We take pride in being one of the leading and safest healthcare providers in England, operating two main acute hospital sites and several award-winning clinics across the region.

Job Duties

Patient Education and Support

Engage in empathetic and informative discussions alongside the breech midwife, providing women and service users with the latest evidence-based insights on external cephalic version, physiological breech birth, and caesarean section options. Initially, your role will focus on observation and learning effective communication strategies to assist women in making informed decisions.

Clinical Training and Development

Work in tandem with our Breech Specialist Midwife and lead consultants to master the nuances of the breech pathway through shadowing and supervised practice. You will gain expertise in presentation scans and ECVs, while familiarizing yourself with our breech pathway and guidelines, including those from recognized resources.

Participate in structured training sessions, where you will learn to perform external cephalic versions safely and conduct necessary assessments. You will also be responsible for maintaining accurate records of assessments, procedures, and follow-up plans.

Operational Responsibilities

Ensure the efficient operation of a weekly clinic by coordinating with administrative staff regarding any changes or additional requirements. In the event of holidays coinciding with clinic days, you will assist in organizing replacement clinic days promptly.

Keep the breech information resources updated to reflect current evidence and research, ensuring they are accessible to all relevant parties.

Collect data and present findings on the breech service to the multidisciplinary team annually.

Facilitate timely referrals to the breech clinic, maintaining awareness of the service across the unit, including collaboration with various departments and professionals.

Stay informed about current practices by attending relevant study days and engaging in self-directed learning.

Collaborate with the clinical skills team and senior midwives to promote safe and evidence-based management of breech cases.

Professional Standards

Adhere to NMC regulations and foster an environment where midwives can practice autonomously and responsibly. Implement Trust and local policies, contributing to any proposed changes in midwifery practices.

Maintain high standards of care within maternity services, implementing recommendations from governmental or professional bodies.

Develop and sustain effective communication and working relationships with colleagues and other professional groups.

Be flexible and willing to assist in other areas of the unit as needed.

Clinical Duties

Work within an agreed job plan to meet service needs, which will be reviewed annually. Under the guidance of a clinical trainer, provide high-quality assessments and ECVs for women referred to the breech service.

Support the Breech clinics in accordance with local protocols and collaborate with the multidisciplinary maternity team in managing caseloads.

Maintain accurate and timely records of assessments and care provided, using effective communication skills to reassure and inform women and their families.

Act as an advocate for women, supporting their choices and collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to implement care plans.

Management and Leadership

Document and report any adverse clinical risks using the appropriate systems. Address verbal complaints and escalate as necessary.

Participate in the strategic development of the service in conjunction with the management team.

Ensure a clean and safe working environment in compliance with health and safety regulations.

Attend relevant meetings to ensure effective communication within the team and follow up on action items.

Education and Mentorship

Serve as a role model, providing mentorship and support for midwives. Assist in orientation programs to familiarize staff with the demands of maternity services.

Attend all mandatory training and relevant courses to enhance your skills.

This job description may evolve based on the needs of the service, with changes made in consultation with the post holder and their manager.
