About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Midwife Specialist to join our team at Barts Health NHS Trust as a Clinical Lead for Diabetes Services in Maternity. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic midwife to take on a leadership role in the development and coordination of our Specialist Diabetic Service within the Maternity Directorate.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide expert clinical and professional advice on the care of women who require pre-conceptual, those with diabetes or those that develop diabetes during pregnancy.
  • Lead the development of specialist programs of evidence-based care for women with diabetes and ensure that individual care is appropriately planned, implemented, and evaluated.
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to deliver training, support students, new midwives, doctors, audit, and quality improvement.
  • Act as the Midwifery lead on the development, coordination, and implementation of the Specialist Diabetic Service within the Maternity Directorate in conjunction with the Obstetric and diabetes Lead.
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and guidelines for the care of women with diabetes in pregnancy.
  • Provide formal teaching and development to staff and colleagues on diabetes care in pregnancy.
  • Contribute to the education and professional development of staff in the acute and primary care setting.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the service provided.

Requirements
  • Experience across the whole spectrum of pregnancy pathway, including normal and complex needs, covering both hospital and community-based care.
  • A minimum of three years as a midwife.
  • Specialist knowledge and experience of diabetes management in pregnancy.
  • Current knowledge of National guidelines, standards, and recommendations impacting on maternity services.
  • Ability to counsel women and give advice within the specialist area of practice for pregnant women with Type 1 diabetes.
  • Proven experience of effective working in a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to provide formal teaching and development to staff and colleagues.
  • Mentorship experience.
  • Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of learning activities and identify how it could be improved.
  • Report writing skills.
  • Presentation skills.
  • IT literate (MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Change management.
  • Innovative practice.
  • Research and audit.
Qualifications
  • Registered Midwife with current NMC registration.
  • Commitment to professional development.
  • Registered Midwife qualified to degree level.
  • ENB 998/997 or equivalent.
  • ENB 928 or similar current diabetes course.
  • Masters or evidence of significant post-registration education.
