Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Biomedical Scientist to enhance our Microbiology team at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust.

The ideal candidate will be a qualified and experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist, possessing at least five years of post-registration experience in the field of Biomedical Science. A relevant professional qualification at degree level or equivalent, along with a pertinent MSc or equivalent, is essential.

In the role of Lead Biomedical Scientist Specialist, you will support the Lead BMS and other senior personnel in overseeing the management of various departmental sections. You will be responsible for managing and allocating staff within your designated area of work. Familiarity with Trust policies, health and safety regulations, and human resources protocols is crucial, ensuring compliance among your team. You may also need to step in for the Lead BMS in their absence, taking direct responsibility for departmental operations. Additionally, you will provide coverage for other Senior Specialists within the department.

Our department is an accredited IBMS/HCPC training facility, and we actively promote continuous professional development.

Key Responsibilities

As a Lead Biomedical Scientist Specialist, you will be proficient in performing and interpreting a diverse array of specialized laboratory tests conducted across various sections of the department. Your daily responsibilities will include managing and supervising a section of work or a group of staff.

You will engage in a variety of tasks and offer expert advice to clinicians and other service users. Training to Specialist Diploma level within your area of expertise will be part of your responsibilities. You will lead a specialized section of the department, ensuring that all technical aspects meet the highest standards. Furthermore, you will evaluate equipment and participate in activities that support the selection of methodologies and the adaptation of procedures used in the department. Your role will also involve driving service enhancements and innovations within your specialized section.

Participation in weekend, bank holiday, and out-of-hours rotas will be required.

Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science or a related field
  • HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist
  • MSc or equivalent in a relevant discipline
  • IBMS Specialist Diploma(s) or equivalent qualifications in the relevant field
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development

Experience

  • Extensive post-registration experience in a laboratory setting within the relevant discipline
  • Experience supervising junior staff members
  • Evidence of rotation through various areas of Microbiology (Molecular, Serology, Bacteriology)

Skills

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to train and mentor staff in the relevant discipline
  • Capability to remain composed in challenging situations or when addressing contentious issues
  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of issues, including equipment malfunctions and complex requests

Knowledge

  • Understanding of laboratory health and safety protocols
  • Proficient in Word and Excel
  • Knowledge of Quality Management Systems, Quality Assurance, and laboratory accreditation
