Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Senior Learning Support Coordinator to join our Support Services team at MidKent College. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team of Learning Support Assistants to provide high-quality support to students with additional needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of Learning Support Assistants: Manage a designated group of Learning Support Assistants to support the Learning Support Coordinators in planning and timetabling class and one-to-one support for students with additional needs.
  • Collaborate with support partners: Work cohesively with other support partners to ensure EHCP and support arrangements are met.
  • Provide individualized support: Work effectively and confidently one-to-one or with small groups of young people to promote their social development through activities, clubs, and events in social areas, promoting opportunities for social interaction and the development of good communication and encouraging participation in small group activities.
  • Support in-class learning: Provide in-class support to learners as required.
  • Plan and coordinate support: Support the Learning Support Coordinators to lead a group of LSAs to provide support for students within a named department, undertaking the planning of timetabling to ensure effective deployment of Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) in line with current resource levels, prioritizing needs, providing induction support for new LSAs, and completing both drop-in observations for LSAs within the curriculum areas and probation reviews and staff appraisals.
  • Develop and implement support plans: Under the supervision of Learning Support Coordinators, lead your team of LSAs to meet individual students to identify support requirements and produce appropriate support plans, reviewing student support three times a year and updating plans to promote independent working, monitor a caseload of students to ensure appropriate support is in place, including Exam Access Arrangements.
  • Monitor and evaluate support: Ensure that LSAs are recording progress against EHCP outcomes/targets for the learners they are supporting. Carry out regular sample audits of the information recorded in conjunction with the wider ALS team.
  • Support students with learning difficulties or disabilities: Support students identified with learning difficulties or disabilities in small groups, one-to-one, or in the classroom, setting SMART targets, monitoring and reviewing student progress and destinations, liaising with relevant staff regarding any changes in support. This will include the preparation of appropriate resources to aid teaching of students with disabilities/difficulties/literacy/numeracy/language.
  • Collaborate with transition teams: Support the collation of information and attend EHCP Annual Reviews, working with the Transition Officer and SEN Practitioner to identify, implement, and monitor transition arrangements.
  • Liaise with departmental teams: Liaise with ALS Learning Support Coordinators, Learning Mentors, Study Programme Coordinators, Heads of Departments, and Personal Progression Tutors regarding planning of support, ensuring schemes of work and lesson planning is available to implement effective support.
  • Complete administrative tasks: Complete day-to-day administration to meet department needs and attend staff development activities, department, and Learning Support meetings and Focus days as required, in order to maintain and develop the skills required to support students.
  • Prepare resources: Prepare resources to aid teaching of students with disabilities/difficulties, ensuring the maintenance of the required physical resources, equipment, and facilities to assist students.
Requirements
  • Experience: Proven experience of working with students with additional needs, preferably in a college or educational setting.
  • Qualifications: Relevant qualifications in education, special educational needs, or a related field.
  • Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, staff, and external agencies. Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge: Knowledge of special educational needs legislation, policies, and procedures, including the SEND Code of Practice.
