Position Overview

This role is designated for a Surgical Services Practitioner, with the potential requirement to transition into Anaesthetics or Recovery as needed.

The primary responsibility is to perform duties as a Scrub Practitioner within the surgical environment, ensuring the delivery of compassionate and professional care at all times.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a proficient Scrub Practitioner, supporting the surgical team during operative procedures.
  • Conduct essential safety checks on all equipment required for surgical operations, ensuring they are clean and functional. Report any equipment deficiencies to the appropriate supervisory personnel.
  • Assist in the preparation of intra-operative medications, fluids, and other necessary substances.
  • Ensure accurate counts are performed and maintain all relevant registers in accordance with established Theatre protocols.
  • Guarantee that the necessary instruments and consumables are readily accessible for each procedure.
  • Exhibit safe handling, removal, and disposal of surgical materials, adhering to trust policies and Theatre standards.
  • After the procedure, ensure appropriate dressings are applied and that all drains and catheters are secure and functioning.
  • Evaluate and document the patient's skin condition upon arrival and departure from the surgical area, checking the wound site, including dressings and drains, and reporting any irregularities.
  • Provide a comprehensive verbal and written handover of the patient to the recovery team, highlighting postoperative instructions, dressings, and drains.
  • Offer postoperative recovery support to patients when the recovery unit is exceptionally busy.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications

  • Relevant post-registration qualification.
  • Registered Operating Department Practitioner with valid HCPC registration or Registered Nurse with current NMC registration.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Mentorship qualification.
  • Teaching and assessing qualification.

Experience Requirements

  • Qualified practitioner with successful completion of in-house competency training.
  • Experience in an operating theatre environment.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Understanding of clinical governance principles.
  • Knowledge of effective risk management practices.
  • Awareness of current NHS issues, including performance targets and modernization efforts.
  • Familiarity with NHS agendas relevant to the role.
  • Adherence to NMC/HCPC Code of Conduct.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Capacity to utilize initiative and meet deadlines.
