Position Overview

This role presents a unique opportunity to become an integral part of the Acute Mental Health Service, contributing to the psychology team within a dynamic environment that encompasses three acute wards and a dedicated Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit. The position will focus on a Female Ward.

The successful candidate will engage collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team to effectively manage risks and deliver a psychological perspective to patient care. Responsibilities will include conducting assessments, developing formulations, and implementing brief interventions for service users and their families. Reflective practice, team formulation, consultation, and post-incident support are essential components of the psychology service.

As a senior member of the psychology team, the individual will provide clinical supervision and managerial oversight to both qualified psychological professionals and those in training, including assistant psychologists and clinical associates.

Key Responsibilities

- Delivering a comprehensive psychology service to the acute ward, including assessments, formulations, and brief interventions (both group and individual).

- Enhancing the multi-disciplinary team's understanding of service users' psychological needs through education, training, team formulation, consultation, and supervision.

- Facilitating reflective practice for one of the wards within the unit.

- Providing line management and clinical supervision to psychological therapists and other professionals.

- Engaging in service development and research initiatives tailored to the needs of the service.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications

  • Doctoral level training in clinical or counselling psychology, or its equivalent, covering models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics, neuropsychology, and at least two distinct psychological therapies.
  • Professional registration as a practitioner psychologist with the Health and Social Care Professions Council or equivalent.
  • Formal training in the supervision of psychological therapies.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Post-Doctoral training in clinical approaches relevant to complex mental health issues.
  • Pre-qualification training in health or neuropsychology, research methodology, or other applied psychology fields.

Essential Experience

  • Significant post-qualification experience in mental health settings, including psychological assessment and treatment across various care environments.
  • Experience in acute mental health settings, engaging with diverse age groups and clinical populations.
  • Proficiency in managing a wide range of client issues, maintaining professionalism in challenging situations.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience in teaching, training, or supervision.
  • Facilitation of psychological therapy groups.
  • Application of clinical psychology in diverse cultural contexts.

Essential Knowledge and Skills

  • Expertise in complex psychological assessment, formulation, intervention, and management.
  • Advanced knowledge of at least two specialized psychological therapies.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed care principles.
  • Familiarity with specialized therapies for challenging client groups.
  • Skills in providing consultation to various professional and non-professional groups.

Desirable Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of the Culture of Care.
  • Skills in complex psychological assessment and testing.
