Position Overview

The role presents a remarkable opportunity to become an integral part of the Acute Mental Health Service, contributing to the psychology team across various acute wards and a male-only Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit. The position will primarily focus on the male PICU.

The successful candidate will engage collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team to effectively manage risks and provide a psychological perspective to the care delivered. Responsibilities will include conducting assessments, formulating treatment plans, and implementing brief interventions for service users and their families. Key components of the psychology service include reflective practice, team formulation, consultation, and post-incident support, all aimed at enhancing the quality of care.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Delivering a comprehensive psychological service to the acute ward, which encompasses assessments, treatment formulation, and brief interventions (both group and individual). This includes facilitating transition sessions and providing recommendations for psychological therapies to ensure safe discharges.
  2. Enhancing the multi-disciplinary team's understanding of service users' psychological needs through educational initiatives, training, team formulation, consultation, and supervision.
  3. Leading reflective practice sessions for one of the wards.
  4. Providing line management and clinical supervision to psychological therapists and other professionals.
  5. Engaging in service development and research initiatives aligned with service needs.

Job Responsibilities

The postholder will be accountable for delivering a comprehensive psychology service within a male psychiatric intensive care unit or female acute ward. Service users typically present with complex psychological needs requiring intensive treatment in a hospital environment. The psychology service will encompass both direct and indirect interventions for service users and their families, while also enhancing the psychological skills of multi-disciplinary team colleagues based on the following guiding principles:

  • Trauma-informed care
  • Recovery-focused approaches
  • Formulation-driven care planning, including discharge pathways

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications:

  • Doctoral-level training in clinical or counselling psychology, or equivalent, including models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics, neuropsychology, and multiple psychological therapies.
  • Professional registration as a practitioner psychologist with the Health and Social Care Professions Council or relevant accreditation.
  • Formal training in the supervision of psychological therapies.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Post-doctoral training in clinical approaches relevant to complex mental health challenges.
  • Pre-qualification training in health or neuropsychology, research methodology, or other applied psychology fields.

Essential Experience:

  • Significant post-qualification experience in mental health settings, including specialist psychological assessment and treatment across various care environments.
  • Experience in acute mental health settings, engaging with diverse age groups and clinical populations.
  • Proficiency in managing a wide range of client issues, maintaining professionalism amidst challenging circumstances.

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience in teaching, training, or supervision.
  • Facilitation of psychological therapy groups.
  • Application of clinical psychology in diverse cultural contexts.

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • Expertise in complex psychological assessment, formulation, intervention, and management requiring sustained concentration.
  • In-depth knowledge of specialized psychological therapies.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed care principles.
  • Familiarity with treatment approaches for challenging populations.
  • Ability to provide consultation to various professional groups.

Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of the Culture of Care.
  • Skills in advanced psychological assessment methods.
