ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND

The Helen Bamber Foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to assisting asylum seekers, refugees, victims of human trafficking, and those affected by human rights violations. Our expert team, comprising therapists, medical professionals, and legal advisors, is internationally recognized for delivering therapeutic care, medical advice, legal protection, and practical assistance. We are committed to safeguarding vulnerable individuals, including adults and children. The British Red Cross (BRC) is part of the global humanitarian network, providing essential support to individuals affected by crises.

The Helen Bamber Foundation seeks a Clinical Psychologist to lead a new initiative in collaboration with the BRC. This partnership aims to enhance access to trauma-informed interventions for individuals escaping conflict, particularly those impacted by the situation in Ukraine, as well as victims of trafficking and torture. The BRC team, in conjunction with the Helen Bamber Foundation, will provide direct casework, psychological assessments, and treatment support across two BRC Refugee Support service locations.

ROLE SUMMARY

As the Clinical Psychologist in this partnership, you will operate within the BRC Refugee Support services in Leicester and Derby, as part of the Helen Bamber Foundation team. Your responsibilities will encompass:

  • Conducting specialized psychological assessments for both clinical and legal purposes.
  • Delivering evidence-based therapeutic interventions.
  • Facilitating referrals to local mental health services.
  • Providing training to local mental health providers and non-clinical staff with significant client interaction.
  • Building internal relationships and partnerships, monitoring outcomes, and potentially supervising trainee clinical psychologists.
  • Contributing to partnership development, policy formulation, research, and fundraising efforts.

We are looking for a candidate with experience in therapeutic work with individuals who have suffered human rights abuses and developed trauma-related disorders. A passion for human rights advocacy beyond individual client work and a commitment to influencing policy change are essential. Regular travel to HBF offices for meetings and professional development will be required, with travel expenses reimbursed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide specialized psychological assessments and therapies to clients of the BRC Refugee Support services.
  • Monitor partnership activities and outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the BRC's Senior Psychosocial Practitioner to develop training for local mental health providers.
  • Assist in preparing medico-legal reports for clients.
  • Conduct audits and research projects relevant to the partnership.
  • Deliver internal and external training in collaboration with the Director of Therapy.
  • Supervise junior staff and liaise with various organizations regarding clinical care and policy.
  • Contribute to policy and position statements with other members of the organization.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Engagement in annual performance reviews and personal development planning is expected. You will be responsible for meeting Continuing Professional Development requirements set by the Health and Care Professions Council and other governing bodies, ensuring you remain informed about relevant literature and research.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Completion of a recognized doctoral-level training in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy) with diverse clinical placements.
  • Registration with HCPC as a practitioner psychologist.
  • A minimum of two years of post-qualification clinical experience in a relevant field.
  • Experience working with clients suffering from PTSD and other trauma-related disorders.
  • Proficiency in delivering trauma-focused therapies, including CBT, EMDR, or Narrative Exposure Therapy.
  • Experience assessing and providing therapies to clients from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Commitment to multidisciplinary teamwork and training provision.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Understanding of legal, political, and social issues in human rights, asylum, and health sectors.
  • Ability to manage a complex caseload while collaborating with safeguarding leads.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and other relevant software.

PROFESSIONAL ATTRIBUTES

  • Commitment to the objectives of the Helen Bamber Foundation.
  • Understanding and implementation of trauma-informed practices.
  • A positive attitude towards audit, monitoring, and evaluation.
