Position Overview
The role presents a unique opportunity to be part of the Acute Mental Health Service, contributing to the psychology team across various acute wards and a dedicated Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit. The primary focus will be on the male PICU.
Key Responsibilities
- Delivering a comprehensive psychological service to the acute ward, which includes assessments, formulations, and brief interventions, both in group and individual settings.
- Enhancing the multi-disciplinary team's understanding of service users' psychological needs through education, training, team formulations, consultations, and supervision.
- Facilitating reflective practice within one of the wards.
- Providing line management and clinical supervision to psychological therapists and other professionals.
- Engaging in service development and research initiatives tailored to the service's requirements.

Job Responsibilities
The postholder will be responsible for offering a comprehensive psychology service within a male psychiatric intensive care unit or female acute ward. Service users will be experiencing mental health crises and will present with complex psychological needs that necessitate intensive treatment in a hospital environment. The psychology service will encompass both direct and indirect interventions for service users and their families, while also fostering the psychological skills and understanding of MDT colleagues, guided by the following principles:
- Trauma-informed care
- Recovery-focused approaches
- Formulation-driven care planning, including discharge pathways
Qualifications and Experience
Essential Qualifications:
- Doctoral level training in clinical or counselling psychology, or equivalent qualifications, including models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics, neuropsychology, and various psychological therapies.
- Professional registration as a practitioner psychologist with relevant regulatory bodies.
- Formal training in the supervision of psychological therapies.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Post-doctoral training in clinical approaches relevant to complex mental health issues.
- Pre-qualification training in health or neuropsychology, research methodology, or other applied psychology fields.
Essential Experience:
- Extensive post-qualification experience in mental health settings, including specialist psychological assessment and treatment across various care environments.
- Experience in acute mental health settings, engaging with diverse age groups and clinical populations.
- Proficiency in managing a wide range of client issues, maintaining professionalism in challenging situations.
Desirable Experience:
- Experience in teaching, training, or supervision.
- Facilitation of psychological therapy groups.
- Application of clinical psychology in diverse cultural contexts.
Essential Knowledge and Skills:
- Expertise in complex psychological assessment, formulation, intervention, and management.
- In-depth knowledge of at least two specialized psychological therapies.
- Awareness of trauma-informed care principles.
- Understanding of psychological therapies applicable to challenging client groups.
- Ability to provide consultation to various professional and non-professional groups.
Desirable Knowledge:
- Familiarity with the Culture of Care.
- Skills in advanced psychological assessment methods.
