Position Overview

We invite applications for the role of Clinical Fellow within the General Surgery Department at Barts Health NHS Trust. This position is ideal for individuals seeking to enhance their surgical expertise in a supportive and educational environment.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the surgical team, engaging in the assessment of all general surgery admissions. This role encompasses both elective and emergency surgical responsibilities.

Main Responsibilities

Clinical Governance & Quality Improvement

Our department maintains a strong commitment to clinical governance, including regular morbidity and mortality reviews. The fellow will participate in at least one quality improvement project related to general surgery, with robust support from our audit team.

Education and Training

Applicants should have completed foundation training and be on track to achieve the MRCS (or equivalent) qualification. While these positions do not offer Deanery accreditation for surgical training, they are designed to provide valuable learning experiences for aspiring surgeons.

Detailed Role Responsibilities

The work schedule adheres to EWTD regulations (48 hours). Barts Health NHS Trust reserves the right to adjust work parameters as necessary to meet service demands.

Fellows may be required to provide on-call coverage across various departments within the trust, ensuring comprehensive patient care.

Experience

  • Involvement in clinical governance and quality improvement initiatives.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in research and publications.

Skills

  • Ability to thrive in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong sense of accountability.
  • Current resuscitation skills.

Desirable Criteria

  • Interest in general surgery.
  • CCrISP, ATLS certifications.

Knowledge

Essential Criteria

  • Comprehensive understanding of pre- and post-operative patient care.

Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent.
  • Completion of MRCS requirements.

  • Part 1 MRCS.
