Position Overview

We invite qualified candidates to apply for the Clinical Fellow position within the General Surgery Department at Barts Health NHS Trust.

This role is designed for individuals at the ST1/ST2 level, including GP trainees seeking enhanced exposure to surgical practices. The successful applicant will collaborate closely with the surgical team, managing all general surgery admissions alongside one of the General Surgical teams responsible for both elective and emergency procedures.

Main Responsibilities

Clinical Governance & Audit

Our department maintains a strong clinical governance framework, featuring monthly morbidity and mortality meetings in general surgery. The post-holder is expected to engage in at least one audit project pertinent to general surgery, with substantial support available from the audit unit.

Training and Education

Candidates should have completed their foundation year training and either be on track to complete or have already passed the MRCS (or equivalent) examination. While these positions do not offer Deanery accreditation for Surgical Training, they are expected to provide valuable training experiences for aspiring surgeons.

Research Opportunities

Barts Health NHS Trust boasts extensive research facilities, and we actively encourage research initiatives within our department and in collaboration with other hospital departments. Fellows will have designated time within their rota to pursue significant research projects during their tenure.

Key Qualifications and Skills

Essential Criteria

  • Prior involvement in governance and audit projects, as well as teaching experience.
  • Ability to thrive in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Strong sense of responsibility and up-to-date resuscitation skills.
  • Broad knowledge of pre- and post-operative patient care.
  • MBBS and completion of MRCS requirements.

Desirable Criteria

  • Track record of research involvement and publications.
  • Demonstrated interest in general surgery.
  • Completion of Part 1 MRCS.
