Neonatal Surgery Clinical Research Fellow

London, Greater London, United Kingdom Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Job Overview

We invite applications for the position of Clinical Research Fellow in Paediatric & Neonatal Surgery. This role will be situated within a prominent Neonatal Unit and a leading Children's Hospital.

Main Responsibilities

The increasing demand for surgical research necessitates a dedicated presence to facilitate patient recruitment and data management for ongoing studies. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with both neonatal and surgical teams to effectively execute these clinical research initiatives. The role will comprise approximately 60% clinical duties and 40% research responsibilities. The selected individual will receive guidance from a designated educational supervisor and will have the opportunity to engage in both elective and emergency surgical cases. Participation in all significant neonatal cases is expected, with elective clinical activities assigned based on the candidate's experience. This may involve day case surgeries at affiliated hospitals and outpatient clinics.

Prior experience in paediatric surgery is essential, although it does not need to be at a middle-grade level. Candidates without registrar-level experience will receive comprehensive support to transition into this role. This position is particularly suitable for those looking to broaden their expertise prior to pursuing specialist training in paediatric surgery. While this is not a formal training post, it offers equivalent training opportunities, including study leave, a dedicated surgical educational supervisor, and an active educational program. We have a proven track record of assisting trainees in securing training numbers in subsequent application cycles.

About the Organization

The position will be based in a leading Neonatal Unit and a Children's Hospital where significant elective surgeries are performed, and emergency surgical patients, including neonates, are admitted. Routine day case surgeries are conducted at affiliated hospitals.

The department boasts a robust portfolio of clinical research, particularly in the field of neonatal surgery. This includes various locally and nationally funded research projects, such as:

  • TOAST: A study on antacid prophylaxis in patients with oesophageal atresia, coordinated by a renowned clinical trial unit.
  • ToSCiN: A project collecting data on infants with stomas and the perspectives of their parents and healthcare providers to determine optimal closure timing.
  • BIND: Research examining the correlation between severe inflammation in premature infants and their neurodevelopmental outcomes.
  • FOPTI: A feasibility study focused on developing innovative imaging techniques for neonates.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will join a team of middle-grade doctors, including clinical fellows and trainees, in Paediatric Surgery, collaborating with colleagues in Paediatric Urology to maintain a 1:10 on-call rota.

The post-holder will be assigned an educational supervisor. The division of responsibilities will be approximately 60% clinical and 40% research. The role is crucial in supporting the recruitment and data management of patients involved in various studies, working alongside neonatal and surgical teams to ensure the successful execution of clinical research projects.
