Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Clinical Fellow to join our esteemed Thoracic Surgery Department. This role involves significant responsibilities in managing in-patients and collaborating closely with our consultant team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily care of thoracic surgery in-patients under the guidance of the consultant team.
  • Coordinate with on-call consultants and nursing personnel regarding urgent and elective patient referrals.
  • Participate regularly in surgical procedures and outpatient consultations.
  • Handle administrative tasks, including the creation of discharge summaries, clinic correspondence, and the communication of pathology findings to referring institutions.
  • Engage in departmental education, research initiatives, and clinical evaluations.

About the Institution

The Thoracic Surgery Department at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust is recognized as one of the leading specialized thoracic centers in the UK, performing a diverse range of approximately 1500 surgical interventions annually.

Our department receives a variety of referrals, primarily of a tertiary nature, encompassing both oncological and non-oncological cases.

The successful candidate will become part of a multidisciplinary team, including 8 thoracic surgery consultants, an associate specialist, and a group of specialist registrars, clinical fellows, nurse practitioners, and junior clinical fellows.

Training will be provided across ward, clinic, and theatre settings, with opportunities to gain experience in multidisciplinary thoracic care. The appointee will be involved in clinical and service activities aimed at maintaining high standards of patient care and contributing to service enhancement.

Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • Full GMC Registration with a valid license to practice.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous professional development.

Clinical Experience

  • A minimum of 12 months of cardiothoracic surgery experience at the registrar level.
  • Preferred: More than 12 months of experience in general thoracic surgery at the registrar level or equivalent, including complex open and VATS procedures.
  • ATLS, ALS, or equivalent certifications.
  • Evidence of contributions to patient care through clinical audits.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Effective verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Experience in leading surgical teams.
  • Understanding of medical research principles and statistical analysis.

  • Strong leadership and organizational capabilities.
  • Awareness of NHS targets, including the 18-week wait and the 62-day cancer pathway.
