Position Overview

We are seeking a qualified and experienced Lead Orthoptist to join our team at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital.

This full-time role is ideal for a proactive and enthusiastic Orthoptist who is eager to enhance their leadership capabilities while broadening their clinical expertise. The successful candidate will possess exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrating a strong dedication to collaborative work within a multidisciplinary environment.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will collaborate closely with the Head Orthoptist, overseeing the daily operations of the orthoptic team and service at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital.

You will be part of a vibrant and diverse team, working alongside medical professionals, optometrists, technical staff, nursing personnel, and operational teams to deliver a comprehensive ophthalmology service for both pediatric and adult patients.

Your caseload will be varied and engaging, encompassing both pediatric and adult cases.

The department encourages advanced clinical practice, allowing orthoptists to engage in extended roles within medical retina and glaucoma.

While your primary location will be at Heartlands, flexibility is essential as you may be required to provide coverage at other sites.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications:

  • Diploma from the British Orthoptic Council or a Degree in Orthoptics.
  • Professional Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Evidence of Clinical Teaching Qualification, such as the BIOS Clinical Teachers Course or City and Guilds 7307.

Essential Experience:

  • Significant experience as an Orthoptist at Band 6 level.
  • Experience in a teaching or supervisory capacity.
  • Demonstrated ongoing professional development and competence in line with professional body recommendations and HCPC requirements.
  • Expert knowledge in Orthoptics, supported by theoretical understanding and continuous professional development.
  • Experience and enthusiasm for developing educational programs and mentoring others in a clinical setting.
  • Ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate specialized care for patients, providing guidance and information to patients, relatives, and care staff.
  • Understanding of safeguarding principles.
  • Awareness of current research related to the specialty.
