Role: Special Education Support Assistant

Location: Elementary Level

JOB SUMMARY: Under the direct guidance of a classroom educator and in accordance with the specifications outlined in the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP), the Special Education Support Assistant will deliver a range of supportive functions aimed at fostering an effective educational experience and ensuring a nurturing, secure, and encouraging atmosphere for students with special needs. The role may involve providing assistance on a one-on-one basis or within small groups, tailored to the specific requirements of the student(s) and their educational context.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate degree, 60 college credits, or successful completion of the Paraprofessional exam.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with children, educators, parents, and other professionals.
  • Capability to assist with the medical needs of students as required.
  • Proficient people skills for sustained and meaningful interactions with students with disabilities.
  • Prior experience working with special education students is advantageous.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The individual in this position must be able to stand, walk, sit, use hands for dexterity, reach with arms, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear in various environments. The role may necessitate lifting or moving items weighing up to 40 pounds.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implement the I.E.P. and adhere to specific behavioral intervention strategies for students with disabilities.
  • Be open to training in First Aid/CPR and applying nonviolent verbal and physical intervention techniques.
  • Assist students with boarding and disembarking from the school transportation.
  • Supervise students during playground and lunch periods.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the classroom teacher, principal, or Director of Student Services.

CONTRACT LENGTH: Academic year

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

Compensation is in accordance with the Paraprofessional Master Agreement, offering a supportive work environment, 8 sick days, 2 personal days annually, various paid holidays, and insurance benefits for those working 30 or more hours per week. Longevity benefits are available after 5 years of service.
