Role Overview

The Finance division at Clifford Chance plays a pivotal role in shaping the firm's strategic direction. This department is responsible for overseeing accounts, budgets, and forecasts, delivering trend analysis and competitor insights, and providing statistical support for presentations to Partners. Additionally, it manages cash flow, remuneration, and internal audits, ensuring the firm's operations are compliant, efficient, and profitable.

The position of Commercial Matter Pricing Specialist is integral to the global Commercial Finance team, recognized as the authority in delivering high-quality commercial pricing, analytical insights, and strategic recommendations.

Collaboration and Support

You will collaborate closely with Partners across the UK and Continental Europe to help achieve the firm's strategic pricing and commercial goals through effective matter pricing support.

This role involves working in conjunction with regional and global pricing teams and actively contributing to international pricing initiatives. You will also engage with local teams from Business Development, the Innovation & Best Delivery Team, and various Finance and business professional functions.

Key Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Pricing Strategy

Collaborating with Partners to develop and model matter pricing strategies, formulate negotiation tactics, and assist in commercial pricing discussions. Providing comprehensive pricing support throughout the entire matter lifecycle. Coordinating regional practice area pricing committees and submitting proposals to both regional and global pricing committees. Ensuring compliance with the firm's commercial standards and pricing governance framework. Continuously enhancing commercial governance tools, processes, and best practices within the team. Conducting training sessions to enhance the commercial acumen of fee earners and business professionals across the network.

Team Dynamics

Contributing as part of a highly skilled and knowledgeable team that is recognized as a trusted and valued resource. Collaborating within a network of commercial pricing specialists aligned with practice areas, providing support to colleagues both regionally and globally. Reporting to the Director of Commercial Finance through your respective Practice Area Leads, while maintaining close alignment with the Regional Business Manager.

Focus Areas

In this capacity, you will support the UK and Continental European regions. The role of the Commercial Matter Pricing Specialist is primarily centered on:

Enhancing commercial awareness among Partners, fee earners, and business professionals, and aiding in strategic decision-making related to commercial matters. This will involve developing matter pricing models and negotiation strategies, providing support throughout the pricing process, particularly during the matter lifecycle. Supporting the implementation of our commercial standards and pricing governance for matters. Identifying opportunities to create additional value for clients through alternative fee arrangements. Engaging with clients in a client-facing capacity, particularly during procurement and legal operations in tenders and negotiations, while supporting Partners throughout. Developing expertise in a specific Practice Area within the region while also providing support to the broader team as needed.

Required Qualifications

Skills

A commercially oriented and numerically adept individual with a proven track record of influencing Partners and senior stakeholders. Excellent communication skills, capable of articulating commercial concepts with the authority needed to influence Partner decisions and engage with clients. A savvy negotiator who can effectively manage margin discussions while liaising with client procurement teams. Ability to work independently under established guidelines while also being a collaborative team player.

Experience

Ideally, experience in providing matter pricing support within a law firm or professional services context. Familiarity with scenario modeling, pricing proposal development, and understanding the factors that drive client value and sustainable pricing.

Knowledge

A finance and procurement expert who understands the nuances of engaging with Partners and clients regarding matter pricing.

Educational Background

A degree-level education is preferred.

Language Proficiency

Fluency in English is required, with additional European language skills considered advantageous.
