Role Overview

The Finance division at Clifford Chance plays a pivotal role in the firm's overarching strategy. This department is engaged in managing financial accounts, budgets, and forecasts, delivering trend analysis and competitor insights, and providing statistical support for presentations to Partners. Additionally, it oversees cash management, remuneration, and internal audits, ensuring the firm's compliance, efficiency, and profitability.

The position of Commercial Pricing Specialist is integral to the global Commercial Finance team, recognized as authorities in delivering high-quality commercial pricing, analytical insights, and strategic recommendations.

Collaboration

You will work closely with Partners across the UK and Continental Europe to support the Firm's strategic pricing and commercial objectives through comprehensive matter pricing assistance.

This role involves close collaboration with both regional and global pricing teams and active participation in international pricing initiatives. You will also work alongside local colleagues from Business Development, the Innovation & Best Delivery Team, and various finance and business professional functions.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Pricing Responsibilities

Collaborating with Partners to develop and model pricing options for matters, crafting negotiation strategies, and assisting in commercial pricing discussions. Providing comprehensive pricing support throughout the lifecycle of matters. Coordinating regional practice area pricing committees and submitting proposals to both regional and global pricing committees. Ensuring compliance with the Firm's commercial standards and pricing governance framework. Continuously enhancing commercial governance tools, processes, and best practices within the team. Training and upskilling fee earners and business professionals across the network to foster improved commercial awareness.

Team Dynamics

Being part of a highly skilled and knowledgeable team that is recognized as a trusted and valued resource. Collaborating within a network of commercial pricing specialists aligned with practice areas, providing support to colleagues both regionally and globally. Reporting to the Director of Commercial Finance through your respective Practice Area Leads, with close alignment to the Regional Business Manager.

Focus Areas

In this role, you will primarily support the UK and Continental European regions. The Commercial Pricing Specialist's focus will be on:

Enhancing commercial awareness among Partners, fee earners, and business professionals, aiding in strategic decision-making related to matters. This includes producing pricing models and negotiation strategies, as well as providing support throughout the pricing process. Supporting the implementation of our commercial standards and pricing governance for matters. Identifying opportunities to deliver added value to clients through alternative fee arrangements. Engaging with clients, including procurement and legal operations, during tenders and negotiations while supporting Partners throughout. Developing expertise within a specific Practice Area while also supporting the broader team as needed.

Required Qualifications

Skills

A commercially savvy and numerically adept individual with a proven ability to influence Partners and senior stakeholders. Excellent communication skills to articulate commercial concepts with the necessary authority to influence Partner decisions and engage with clients. A strong negotiator capable of maintaining margins in discussions while managing relationships with client procurement teams. Ability to work independently while adhering to guiding principles and as part of a collaborative, impactful team.

Experience

Ideally, experience in providing pricing support within a law firm or professional services context. Familiarity with scenario modeling, pricing proposals, and understanding the factors that contribute to delivering client value and commercially viable pricing.

Knowledge

A finance or procurement expert who understands the nuances of engaging with Partners and clients regarding matter pricing.

Educational Background

A degree-level education is preferred.

Language Proficiency

Fluency in English is required. Proficiency in additional European languages is advantageous.
