Position Overview

This role presents a unique opportunity to spearhead the enhancement and management of surveillance, epidemiology, and investigation concerning various travel-related infections. The successful candidate will be part of the Travel Health and IHR team (TH_IHR) and will hold the primary responsibility for overseeing, analyzing, and refining the surveillance framework, systems, and databases pertinent to travel-associated infections. This position is crucial for delivering expert scientific and logistical support during national and international outbreaks of travel-related illnesses, as well as leading the dissemination of information regarding the surveillance of these conditions. The incumbent will significantly contribute to the evidence base that informs policy and guidance in these critical areas, playing a vital role in the UK Health Security Agency's efforts to address infections acquired abroad.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assume scientific leadership for the national surveillance of travel-associated infections across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, while directing the advancement of national surveillance systems.
  • Conduct intricate statistical and epidemiological analyses of data related to travel-associated infections sourced from diverse surveillance channels, ensuring the availability of high-quality epidemiological data.
  • Respond to international events and outbreaks through prompt detection, risk assessment, and management of travel-associated infectious threats.
  • Collaborate with NaTHNaC to provide expert guidance to governmental bodies regarding infectious disease risks in countries frequented by UK residents, particularly in response to international public health emergencies and natural disasters.
  • Offer specialized advice on the epidemiological dimensions of preventing and controlling travel-associated infections by contributing to the formulation of guidance, designing databases, aggregating and interpreting epidemiological data, conducting statistical analyses, and contributing to situation reports and subsequent publications.
  • Lead research initiatives aligned with the objectives of the Travel Health and IHR team, perform complex statistical and epidemiological analyses of travel-associated infection data, and author scientific papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Develop and deliver presentations and training sessions in the area of expertise, while managing junior team members as appropriate.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

Principal Scientist (Epidemiology) in Travel Health and IHR

The Travel Health and IHR team plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the health of British travelers through surveillance, information dissemination, education, and research. This team is integral to supporting the UK Health Security Agency's function as the National Focal Point under the International Health Regulations and as the EU Focal Point under the EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement. The team operates within the TARZET division, which encompasses Travel Health, Zoonoses, Emerging Infections of Pandemic Potential, and Respiratory & TB within the Clinical and Public Health group at UKHSA.

The scope of the team's work includes providing scientific support to the Advisory Committee on Malaria Prevention (ACMP), coordinating activities related to travel-associated infections across UKHSA, conducting surveillance of these infections, and collaborating closely with both internal and external partners to assess, manage, and control travel-associated infections.

The postholder will lead the surveillance, epidemiology, and investigation of travel-associated infections within the Travel Health and IHR team. Responsibilities will include managing, analyzing, and enhancing the surveillance portfolio, systems, and databases for travel-associated infections in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, in close collaboration with Public Health Wales, Public Health Agency (Northern Ireland), and Public Health Scotland. The role also entails providing specialized scientific and logistical support during national and international outbreaks of travel-associated infections, working closely with colleagues across UKHSA, NaTHNaC, the travel health sector, and other relevant agencies and institutions. The postholder will be tasked with leading the development and dissemination of information on the surveillance of travel-related illnesses, particularly focusing on determining the burden and distribution of these infections and monitoring progress in mitigating the risks associated with travel-related illnesses. This position is essential for contributing to the evidence base that informs policy and guidance in these significant areas.

The postholder will also be expected to:

  • Develop operational research proposals.
  • Write scientific reports and papers for publication.
  • Contribute to the production of official guidance.
  • Teach and train at the postgraduate level and other courses.
  • Manage scientific staff and conduct their annual performance reviews.
  • Participate in UKHSA development and work groups.

The successful candidate will be expected to work independently at a senior level, exercising significant autonomy within their area of expertise.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria:

  • Advanced degree in Epidemiology or a related field (MSc or PhD).
  • Experience in infectious disease epidemiology, surveillance, outbreak investigation, and response.
  • Proven track record in managing scientific projects and providing epidemiological information and guidance to colleagues and collaborators.
  • Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Capacity to interpret and succinctly summarize extensive information from complex and varied data sources.
  • Experience with databases, spreadsheets, statistical, and graphical software.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
