Position Overview

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in enhancing monitoring systems for diseases preventable by vaccination, with a particular emphasis on the surveillance of pertussis. It is crucial to clarify the epidemiological landscape, assess the public health implications, and devise and refine control measures. Additionally, the candidate will assist in the assessment of pertussis and other diseases that can be prevented through vaccination.

Key Responsibilities

The individual will collaborate with scientific, clinical, and administrative personnel within the Immunisation Division to spearhead analytical efforts and related tasks primarily focused on the oversight of pertussis vaccination initiatives and supporting established monitoring systems. Responsibilities will include:

  • Managing and interpreting surveillance data sourced from various channels, necessitating regular follow-up on pertinent reports for further epidemiological insights and confirmation samples as required.
  • Collaborating closely with team members to address ad hoc inquiries that necessitate scientific expertise.
  • Engaging with healthcare professionals to gather enhanced surveillance data and coordinating with NHS and reference laboratories regarding laboratory information.
  • Compiling routine surveillance reports for health protection documentation.
  • Assisting in the investigation and management of outbreaks.
  • Leading and managing specific evaluations of diseases preventable by vaccination.
  • Analyzing surveillance data and study outcomes, and drafting reports and articles for scientific publications.
  • Aiding in the preparation of documents and reports to inform policy for relevant health committees.
  • Designing presentations and disseminating surveillance data and study findings at internal, national, and international meetings/conferences.
  • Representing the Immunisation Department in weekly infection update meetings and maintaining relevant sections on the agency's website.
  • Supporting public health incident responses led by the Immunisation and Vaccine-Preventable Disease division, with all members at the EO grade and above required to undertake appropriate training for task management roles as necessary.

Essential Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following essential criteria:

  • A first degree in a scientific discipline.
  • A higher degree in Epidemiology or a related field, or relevant postgraduate experience.
  • Proficiency in developing and utilizing relational databases (including Access), spreadsheets, and advanced statistical and graphical software (such as Stata or R).
  • Experience in writing and evaluating scientific documentation.
  • Skills in interpreting and assessing microbiological or epidemiological data related to vaccine-preventable diseases, along with strong analytical capabilities.
  • The ability to work autonomously and take ownership of technical tasks and time management.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Familiarity with vaccination schedules and policies in the UK.
