Position Overview

This role presents a unique opportunity to become a pivotal member of the management team within a specialized unit dedicated to the preparation and dispensing of chemotherapy medications, ensuring the delivery of exceptional pharmacy services.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be tasked with:

- Overseeing the daily operations and technical management of the Chemotherapy Preparation and Dispensing Unit.

- Ensuring the implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive quality management system that adheres to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards.

- Collaborating effectively with various departments, including Cancer services, Pharmacy teams, Procurement, Engineering, and External Contractors, to continuously assess service delivery, inventory management, and unit upkeep.

About Our Team

The Pharmacy Chemotherapy Preparation Unit is a diverse and dedicated team comprising over 25 professionals.

We are responsible for the preparation and dispensing of more than 3900 chemotherapy doses each month.

This position offers the chance to engage in innovative service delivery enhancements and operational improvements.

Job Duties

- Ensure the quality system for chemotherapy preparations is fully operational, with all deviations reported in a timely manner.

- Manage workflow and planning for all aseptic preparations effectively.

- Supervise the daily management and task allocation for all technical personnel.

- Perform senior technician duties as needed, including the aseptic preparation and dispensing of chemotherapy and other pharmaceutical products, while acting as a supervisory checker in aseptic environments.

- Serve as a role model for staff throughout the department.

- Undertake additional responsibilities as directed by specialized chemotherapy production pharmacists or the chief technician.

- Lead recruitment efforts for the Trust's chemotherapy aseptic units and assist in broader pharmacy recruitment initiatives.

- Conduct annual inventory assessments and internal audits.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Proven ability to train and evaluate others in compliance with GMP standards.
  • In-depth knowledge of GMP, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and Quality Assurance to maintain and enhance the quality system of an aseptic unit.
  • Strong organizational skills for effective stock management oversight.
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with a diverse range of professionals and patients, utilizing clear written and spoken English.

Experience Requirements

Essential

  • Demonstrated expertise in aseptic preparation or manufacturing within or outside NHS pharmacy aseptic units.
  • Experience in multidisciplinary collaboration while managing and planning aseptic service delivery.
  • Proven track record in a senior role (minimum NHS AFC B5) as a team leader within aseptic services.
  • Ability to initiate and complete quality system documentation, including deviations, change controls, and corrective actions, ensuring timely evaluation and documentation.

Desirable Experience

  • Direct involvement in an EL(97)52 or MHRA audit.
  • Experience in staff appraisal and performance objective setting.

Educational Background

Essential

  • Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
  • QCF/NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services, along with an accredited qualification in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent.
  • Relevant leadership and management experience, demonstrating a high level of specialist knowledge.

Desirable Educational Background

  • Relevant leadership and management training or progress towards CMS/DMS postgraduate studies.
  • Participation in university courses related to aseptic services.
