Community Cancer Outreach Coordinator

Carlisle, Cumbria, United Kingdom Carlisle Healthcare Full time

Position Overview

This position is part of the North Cumbria Primary Care Services Project Team. The role is hosted by Carlisle Healthcare PCN, collaborating with various Primary Care Networks throughout the North Cumbria region.

This is a remote position requiring regular travel across North Cumbria.

With funding from the Northern Cancer Alliance, the project team is looking to recruit Community Cancer Outreach Coordinators to assist the Project Manager and PCN Cancer Engagement Lead in enhancing cancer outcomes through earlier detection.

We aim to fill two positions: one primarily focused on West Cumbria and the other on Eden Valley & Carlisle. Depending on the applicants' locations, the areas of responsibility can be adjusted. Both coordinators should be prepared to work collaboratively across North Cumbria for larger community events.

For the right candidate, this role could also be considered as a single full-time position covering the entirety of North Cumbria.

Main Responsibilities

The primary objective of this role is to enhance cancer outcomes, particularly through early detection. Responsibilities include:

  1. Implementing a variety of community-oriented cancer awareness initiatives and interventions.
  2. Coordinating volunteer cancer champions in North Cumbria to participate in events and promote awareness.
  3. Collaborating across North Cumbria to identify and target communities most in need of health interventions.
  4. Employing evidence-based strategies to effectively reach target populations.
  5. Leveraging support from the Northern Cancer Alliance and contributing to their peer support networks.
  6. Aligning efforts with the Northern Cancer Alliance workplan to support objectives related to early cancer detection.
  7. Working closely with the Primary Care Network cancer engagement lead to enhance screening uptake and early diagnosis.
  8. Continuously assessing the effectiveness of approaches and adapting strategies as necessary.
  9. Ensuring resources are allocated according to the needs of the populations served.
  10. Staying informed about current health promotion trends and local/national campaigns.
  11. Building partnerships with local organizations, Primary Care, and other entities to facilitate access to appropriate services.
  12. Producing monthly reports detailing activities, feedback, and outreach, including case studies.
  13. Targeting interventions towards communities facing health inequalities, including those with lower health literacy and diverse ethnic backgrounds.
  14. Engaging younger populations to raise awareness of cancer signs and symptoms, encouraging them to communicate this information within their families and communities.
  15. Supporting the Targeted Lung Health Check program to maximize participation among hard-to-reach groups.
  16. Contributing to local campaigns identified by the Northern Cancer Alliance, focusing on specific cancer awareness.
  17. Promoting the importance of completing cancer screening tests and supporting initiatives to increase participation.
  18. Utilizing available data systems to analyze community needs and inform intervention strategies.
  19. Providing feedback and data to evaluate the impact of the role.

In performing these duties, the post-holder may have access to confidential information regarding patients, their families, and healthcare staff. All such information must be treated with the utmost confidentiality and shared only with authorized individuals in accordance with organizational policies.
