Position Overview

The ideal candidate will possess personal lived experience of overcoming mental health challenges and utilizing mental health services. It is essential to clearly articulate this experience in your application.

We are looking to fill two part-time positions, and we welcome applicants who may prefer reduced hours. The primary location for these roles will be in the designated area, with travel required across various regions as part of the responsibilities.

As a Peer Recovery Support Specialist, you will be an integral member of the team, assisting individuals in accessing appropriate interventions and support tailored to their unique recovery journeys, as outlined in their personalized care plans.

By sharing your own recovery experiences, you will provide inspiration and hope to others, demonstrating that recovery is achievable.

Key Responsibilities

Your role will involve supporting individuals facing mental health challenges to:

  • Enhance and maintain their independence.
  • Develop essential life skills, confidence, resilience, and self-esteem.
  • Build social connections and mitigate feelings of isolation.
  • Participate in peer support sessions, offering holistic guidance, information, and referrals as needed.
  • Identify opportunities for self-directed recovery through personal choice and management.
  • Access necessary services and support.
  • Promote positive decision-making.
  • Collaborate with service users and, when appropriate, their caregivers to create personalized care plans.
  • Encourage active participation in their own care planning process.

Job Duties

You will leverage your personal recovery journey to support individuals using the service, either in one-on-one or group settings. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Modeling and mentoring recovery strategies and coping mechanisms.
  • Implementing a person-centered and recovery-focused approach in all aspects of your work.
  • Inspiring hope and sharing valuable life lessons.
  • Adopting a trauma-informed perspective.
  • Contributing to peer support initiatives, including individual and group sessions.
  • Monitoring and regularly reviewing the safety and well-being of each service user.
  • Participating in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of support services.
  • Reporting any incidents or unusual occurrences to your supervisor.
  • Addressing any safeguarding concerns with your line manager.
  • Attending relevant team meetings and supervision sessions.
  • Engaging in reflective practices with team members.

Qualifications

Required

  • Strong educational background up to GCSE level or equivalent.
  • Qualification at NVQ Level 4 or an equivalent credential.

Experience

Required

  • Personal lived experience of recovery from mental health challenges.
  • Experience as a peer support worker, whether paid or voluntary.
  • Willingness to share personal experiences of mental health challenges with service users and their families.

Skills

Required

  • Developed personal strategies for managing your own recovery.
  • Ability to maintain a non-judgmental stance.
  • Capacity to support individuals in their recovery without taking over their responsibilities.
  • Sensitive understanding of diversity issues and a commitment to promoting anti-discriminatory practices and equal opportunities.
  • Demonstrated empathy, compassion, and patience.
  • Ability to communicate your story in a concise and meaningful manner.
