Role Overview

The position involves delivering expert clinical management for inpatients experiencing communication and swallowing disorders referred from acute medical settings.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Assessment and Diagnosis: Utilize advanced clinical judgment to conduct thorough assessments, establish clinical diagnoses, and develop tailored therapeutic or compensatory care programs for patients with intricate communication and swallowing challenges.

Specialist Knowledge: Maintain in-depth knowledge of complex conditions prevalent in acute care, particularly those associated with aging and frailty, and their implications for communication and swallowing.

Team Collaboration: Provide guidance and second opinions to fellow Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) professionals, serving as a vital resource for multidisciplinary teams in Acute Medicine regarding the management of swallowing and communication issues.

Multidisciplinary Team Engagement: Actively participate as a core member of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), influencing treatment planning and rehabilitation strategies for communication and swallowing.

Advocacy and Support: Employ strong negotiation skills to advocate for patients and their families, contributing to discussions and decisions that align with their best interests.

Risk Management: Serve as a specialist resource for multidisciplinary teams in managing patients at risk during eating and drinking activities.

Collaboration with Medical Staff: Engage closely with referring consultants, medical personnel, nursing staff, and community teams to ensure optimal treatment and support for patients admitted to the hospital.
