Position Overview

We are looking for an Associate Practitioner to join our Blood Sciences Department, specializing in Haematology and Blood Transfusion. This role requires collaboration with Biomedical Scientists and close interaction with the Pathology Reception team, contributing to a dynamic Blood Sciences unit.

Key Responsibilities

The Associate Practitioner will be responsible for:

  • Operating and maintaining automated analyzers in line with laboratory protocols, including quality control measures.
  • Conducting manual tests and accurately documenting results.
  • Preparing blood smears through manual staining techniques.
  • Registering patient samples into the Laboratory Computer System, ensuring precise test requests are entered.
  • Centrifuging samples and appropriately loading them onto laboratory analyzers.
  • Assisting Biomedical Scientists by managing pending test lists effectively.
  • Coordinating the referral, packaging, and dispatch of samples to various Trust sites and external laboratories.
  • Responding to inquiries at the reception and via telephone, liaising with Trust staff and the public.
  • Managing stock control, including ordering and receiving deliveries, and organizing reagent batches.
  • Supporting the training and competency evaluation of new staff members.
  • Acting as a deputy for the Pathology Reception Team Leader when necessary.

Candidate Requirements

Applicants should possess:

  • Previous laboratory experience, preferably in an NHS pathology setting.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Attention to detail and the capability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Flexibility to participate in a 24/7 shift rota.

Essential Qualifications

Candidates must hold:

  • NVQ Level 3 in Health (pathology stream) or equivalent qualifications.
  • IBMS Certificate of Achievement Part 2 or demonstrate equivalent competency.
  • A foundation degree in Healthcare Practice.
  • GCSEs in Science and/or Mathematics.
