Position Overview

We are looking for a dedicated professional with strong literacy and numeracy abilities to join our dynamic team as a Medical Laboratory Technician within our high-volume Department of Blood Sciences, which handles numerous samples daily.

The Medical Laboratory Technician position entails collaborating with various departments including Specimen Reception, Biochemistry, Immunology, Haematology, and Blood Transfusion. You will be part of a skilled team comprising Biomedical Scientists and Associate Practitioners.

Key Responsibilities

Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Prioritizing urgent and accident & emergency samples to ensure timely patient care.
  • Receiving samples from various sources, including hospital delivery systems and GP surgeries via courier.
  • Accurately logging a significant volume of patient samples into the Laboratory Information Management System, ensuring precise test requests are recorded. Attention to detail is crucial due to the extensive range of test codes.
  • Centrifuging samples and appropriately loading them onto the designated laboratory analyzers.
  • Coordinating the referral, packaging, and dispatch of samples to other Trust locations and external Trusts.
  • Addressing reception and telephone inquiries while liaising with Trust personnel and the public.
  • Managing deliveries, ensuring they are directed to the correct department within Pathology, and organizing stock as needed.
  • Scanning request forms and ensuring timely distribution of printed reports to the appropriate requesting departments, GPs, or clinics.

Job Requirements

Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in keyboard skills, computer literacy, and experience in a reception or administrative role. Previous laboratory experience is advantageous. Ideal candidates will be well-organized, detail-oriented, effective communicators, team players, and adaptable. The ability to ask questions and assimilate information is essential.

Shift Requirements

This position requires participation in a 24/7 shift rotation, including day shifts, late shifts, night shifts, weekend shifts, and bank holidays. Day and late shifts are typically 8 hours, while night shifts and some weekends/bank holidays are 12 hours. During weekends, bank holidays, and night shifts, you may be the sole Pathology Reception staff member on site, although Biomedical Scientists will also be present.

Qualifications

Essential

  • NVQ Level 3 in Health (Pathology stream) or equivalent.
  • GCSE in Science and/or Mathematics or higher.

Desirable

  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • NVQ Level 3 in Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent.
  • IBMS Certificate of Achievement Part 1 or demonstrable assessed competency.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Ability to follow protocols and instructions accurately.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in computer applications.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Capacity to maintain focus for extended periods.

Desirable

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
