Job Overview

We are looking for an Associate Practitioner to join our Blood Sciences Department, specializing in Haematology and Blood Transfusion. This role entails collaborating with Biomedical Scientists and closely interacting with the Pathology Reception team as part of the Blood Sciences unit. Our department is known for its high volume of samples received from various sources, including acute hospital wards, community hospitals, outpatient clinics, and GP surgeries. Testing is conducted at our facility or referred to other laboratories as necessary.

Key Responsibilities

The Associate Practitioner will be responsible for:

  • Operating and maintaining automated analyzers in compliance with laboratory protocols, including quality control material management.
  • Conducting manual tests and accurately documenting results.
  • Performing manual staining of blood smears.
  • Inputting patient samples into the Laboratory Computer System and ensuring precise test requests are recorded.
  • Centrifuging samples and properly loading them onto the relevant laboratory analyzers.
  • Assisting Biomedical Scientists by managing pending test lists.
  • Coordinating the referral, packaging, and dispatch of samples to other Trust sites and external laboratories.
  • Handling reception and telephone inquiries, liaising with Trust staff and the public.
  • Managing stock control, including ordering and receiving deliveries, and organizing reagent batches.
  • Supporting the training and competency assessment of new staff.
  • Acting as a deputy for the Pathology Reception Team Leader when required.

Essential Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Previous laboratory experience, preferably in an NHS pathology setting.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong computer literacy and familiarity with medical/scientific terminology.
  • A relevant qualification, such as NVQ Level 3 in Health (pathology stream) or equivalent.
  • The ability to work flexibly and participate in a 24/7 shift pattern.
