Position Overview
An exceptional opportunity has arisen for a registered nurse specializing in pediatrics to join our dynamic Children's Observation and Assessment Unit.
The Children's Observation and Assessment Unit (COAU) comprises 11 beds and 11 waiting seats, providing a 24-hour service that accommodates an average of 40 pediatric patients daily. The unit is characterized by a rapid turnover, with children typically staying for around 4 hours before either being admitted to the ward or discharged.
Referrals to the unit come from various sources, including general practitioners, emergency departments, and other healthcare professionals, ensuring a diverse range of cases.
This role demands a compassionate and professional demeanor. The fast-paced environment requires an individual who excels in communication, thrives in teamwork, and can effectively manage challenging situations with composure.
Flexibility is essential, as the position involves working long shifts, including nights, weekends, and bank holidays, and may require occasional duties within family care.
Key Responsibilities
As a Senior Pediatric Nurse in the Children's Observation and Assessment Unit, your primary responsibilities will include:
- Conducting initial assessments of children upon arrival, utilizing Pediatric Early Warning Scores (PEWS) and demonstrating proficiency in identifying critically ill children.
- Collaborating with medical staff to devise and implement care plans, while continuously evaluating their effectiveness.
- Performing specimen collection, including urine and blood samples.
- Administering prescribed medications accurately.
- Working closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure comprehensive care.
- Utilizing IT systems for documentation and communication.
- Adopting a child-friendly, family-centered approach in all interactions.
- Possessing skills in pediatric advanced life support.
- Maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the unit.
- Participating in audits and mandatory training sessions.
- Potentially taking on a link nurse role to support specific initiatives.
