The Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment. Established under the Environment Act 2021, our mission is to ensure accountability among government and public entities, striving for continuous environmental improvement. Our work encompasses various activities, including monitoring progress against environmental objectives, advising on legislative changes, and addressing public complaints that may lead to enforcement actions.

The Insights Directorate serves as the analytical hub of the OEP, focusing on a wide range of environmental issues. Our key priorities for the upcoming years include enhancing biodiversity, ensuring clean water, and promoting effective governance, alongside expanding our initiatives related to waste management, chemical safety, marine ecosystems, and soil health.

With a team of over 70 professionals, we foster a dynamic, supportive, and adaptable workplace that spans England and Northern Ireland, addressing environmental matters at the UK government level. We offer flexible working arrangements, high-profile projects, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on environmental conservation.

Role Overview

The Insights Directorate is pivotal in advancing the OEP's strategic goal of holding the government accountable for its environmental commitments. Through our assessment of the Environmental Improvement Plan, we evaluate and provide insights on governmental progress, recommending enhancements to achieve environmental targets.

In addition to monitoring government performance, the Insights Directorate collaborates with other OEP divisions to support their specialized functions, including investigating compliance failures, managing public complaints, and pursuing legal actions against public bodies.

This position offers a unique opportunity to take a leadership role in a critical aspect of the OEP's mission, ensuring we gather the necessary evidence to fulfill our responsibilities effectively.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidates will oversee one or more of the following initiatives:

  • Publish an independent assessment of the Northern Ireland Executive's progress in implementing its environmental improvement strategies, along with actionable recommendations.
  • Provide and disseminate guidance to the Northern Ireland Executive regarding its environmental improvement plans as they evolve.
  • Evaluate and report on the UK government's strategy to determine whether environmental targets will significantly enhance the natural environment in England and Northern Ireland.
  • Scrutinize governmental progress in priority areas identified by the OEP.

One of the Senior Environmental Analyst roles will emphasize the evidence program. Responsibilities for this position will include:

  • Collaborating with the OEP's Chief Scientist and the Head of Science and Evidence to develop and implement the organization's evidence program.
  • Leading the strategy for commissioning evidence and fostering relationships with key suppliers and external experts.
  • Establishing and managing the governance framework for the OEP evidence program, ensuring timely and appropriate commissioning of work from the right sources.

The role holder will also be recognized as a subject-matter expert in one or more domains of the natural environment.

Additional Information

The OEP is committed to promoting a high-performance culture, offering opportunities for professional development and continuous learning. Employees have access to various resources to support their wellbeing, including an Employee Assistance Programme, occupational health services, and a range of wellness initiatives.

We encourage a balanced work-life dynamic, providing generous leave policies and flexible working arrangements to accommodate individual needs.

If you are ready to contribute to the vital work of the Office for Environmental Protection and make a difference in environmental governance, we welcome your interest in this role.
