The International Student Advisor is an integral member of the International Student and Scholar team, dedicated to delivering comprehensive services for international students. This role encompasses immigration guidance, adherence to institutional compliance for DHS/SEVIS, and a broad spectrum of support for the WPI international community. The advisor acts as a crucial link between various departments at WPI and federal authorities, serving as a Designated School Official (DSO). All actions and decisions must align with federal regulations and University policies. Candidates must possess U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status to fulfill DSO responsibilities, as mandated by the Department of Homeland Security and Department of State regulations.WPI is committed to fostering an inclusive work environment that values diversity. The starting salary is $55,400, commensurate with experience.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee the management of international student data, ensuring timely updates in Workday, ISSM, and Terra Dotta. Monitor SEVIS alerts and take necessary corrective actions or escalate issues to the director. Provide advisory services to both undergraduate and graduate international student populations, offering immigration guidance on matters such as travel signatures, issuance of updated and new I-20 forms, Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT), OPT STEM extensions, and reduced course load forms. Conduct the required SEVIS registration at the beginning of each semester. Counsel international students on a variety of topics, including cross-cultural challenges, financial concerns, and personal issues. Collaborate with other offices such as Undergraduate Admissions, Academic Advising, Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Multicultural Education, Student Activities, Health Services, Student Development and Counseling, Center for Wellness, and the Career Development Center to facilitate personal, cultural, and professional programming. Engage in Division of Student Affairs initiatives. Participate in division or campus-wide committees as appropriate. Act as a member of the Administrator-On-Call group as coordinated through the Dean of Students Office. Stay informed about international student issues and evolving government regulations. Perform additional duties as required.Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in international relations, international education, or a related field. 1-3 years of relevant experience required. Master's degree preferred. Basic understanding of immigration regulations and familiarity with SEVIS expected upon completion of appropriate training. Proficiency in technology is essential, with fluency in departmental immigration software programs (e.g., SEVIS, ISSM, Terra Dotta) and Zoom/Teams expected after training. Knowledge of a foreign language and international experience is preferred. Demonstrated experience in promoting and fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace, with a strong commitment to DEI principles required. Awareness of current research and issues in international education is preferred. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident to serve as a DSO in the SEVIS system.Please include a cover letter with your resume for consideration.
