Job Description Director, Research Facilities & InnovationReporting to the Vice Provost for Research, this leadership role provides strategic direction and oversight for two key research facilities: Practice Point and BETC. The Director will cultivate a thriving environment that supports cutting-edge research, fosters collaboration, and drives innovation.
Responsibilities- Organizational Leadership & Management: Design and implement an organizational structure that effectively aligns with WPI's research goals. Oversee recruitment, training, performance management, and professional development of staff within the facilities.
- Operational Excellence: Ensure seamless day-to-day operations of both facilities, prioritizing user satisfaction, adherence to funding agency guidelines, and compliance with all relevant regulations and standards.
- Strategic Growth & Development: Develop a comprehensive business plan encompassing financial sustainability, resource allocation, staffing needs, and revenue generation strategies. Actively engage with the community to identify and pursue new partnerships and funding opportunities.
- Data-Driven Decision Making: Establish robust systems for tracking facility usage, user demographics, and key performance indicators. Leverage data insights to inform strategic planning, resource allocation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Marketing & Outreach: Develop a comprehensive marketing plan to promote the facilities' capabilities and attract both internal and external clients. Manage all communication channels, including website content, social media presence, client feedback mechanisms, and promotional materials.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including corporate partners, government agencies (e.g., MLSC, MassTech), and academic institutions. Collaborate on programming initiatives, research projects, and workforce development programs.
- Equipment Management & Maintenance: Oversee the installation of new equipment, negotiate service contracts with vendors, and ensure timely maintenance and repair of existing facilities.
- Grant Writing & Reporting: Lead or support grant proposal development and budget preparation. Prepare comprehensive reports for internal stakeholders and funding agencies.
- Campus Collaboration: Serve as the primary liaison between the research facilities and other departments across campus, facilitating efficient utilization of resources and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Advisory Board Leadership: Manage advisory boards for both Practice Point and BETC, fostering a collaborative environment that provides valuable insights and guidance.
- Thought Leadership & Dissemination: Present research findings and facility services at conferences, seminars, and other relevant events to showcase WPI's expertise and contributions to the field.
