JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The International Student Advisor is an integral member of the International Student and Scholar team, dedicated to delivering comprehensive services to international students. This role encompasses immigration guidance, adherence to institutional compliance mandates for DHS/SEVIS, and additional support for the international community at WPI. The advisor acts as a key liaison among various departments within the institution and with federal authorities as a Designated School Official (DSO). It is essential that all actions and decisions align with federal regulations and University policies. Applicants must possess U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status to fulfill DSO responsibilities, in accordance with Department of Homeland Security and Department of State regulations.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Key Responsibilities:

Oversee the management of international student data, ensuring timely updates in Workday, ISSM, and Terra Dotta. Monitor SEVIS alerts and take necessary corrective actions or escalate issues to the director. Provide advisory services to both undergraduate and graduate international student populations, offering immigration guidance on matters such as travel signatures, issuance of updated and new I-20 forms, Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT), OPT STEM extensions, and reduced course load forms. Conduct the required SEVIS registration at the beginning of each semester. Counsel international students on a variety of topics, including cross-cultural, financial, and personal issues. Collaborate with other offices such as Undergraduate Admissions, Academic Advising, Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Multicultural Education, Student Activities, Health Services, Student Development and Counseling, Center for Wellness, and the Career Development Center to enhance personal, cultural, and professional programming. Engage in Division of Student Affairs initiatives. Participate in division or campus-wide committees as appropriate. Act as a member of the Administrator-On-Call group as coordinated through the Dean of Students Office. Stay informed about international student concerns and evolving government regulations. Execute additional duties as required.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in international relations, international education, or a related field. A minimum of 1-3 years of relevant experience is required. A Master's degree is preferred. Basic understanding of immigration regulations and familiarity with SEVIS is expected following appropriate training. Proficiency in technology is essential, with fluency in departmental immigration software programs (e.g., SEVIS, ISSM, Terra Dotta) and Zoom/Teams expected upon completion of training. Knowledge of a foreign language and international experience is advantageous. Demonstrated experience in promoting and supporting a diverse and inclusive workplace, with a strong commitment to DEI is required. Awareness of current research and issues in international education is preferred. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident to serve as a DSO in the SEVIS system.
