Patient Safety Specialist

Main Duties and Responsibilities Lead the Trust approach to implementing the Patient Safety Specialist role and patient safety agenda, fulfilling the requirements of the role as per the national person specification. Identify and respond to local and national patient safety priorities, taking a proactive approach in surveillance, early identification and organisational approaches for learning, quality improvement and change, leading and supporting activity and ensuring that systems thinking, human factors understanding and just culture principles are embedded in processes. Lead on the implementation of mechanisms for meaningful dissemination of learning, including the production and distribution of information regarding patient safety practices. Clinical Work closely with the network directors to ensure the patient safety agenda is established across tall the Care Hubs.
Work with others to support the development of innovative solutions and approaches to patient safety drawing from research into best practice and national policy as required. Provide expert, specialist advice and support on matters relating to patient safety commensurate with knowledge and specialist training provided to Patient Safety Specialists by NHS England/Improvement. Support best practice in communicating with patients and/or their relatives when things have gone wrong in line with the Duty of Candour. This can involve directly communicating complex and sensitive information that may not be received positively and which requires a high-level of interpersonal skills in order to achieve the right outcome.
To lead on the promotion of national patient and local safety initiatives throughout the Trust. To undertake critical reviews of current patient safety risk issues, analyse and make recommendations to the Executive Team and Senior Managers. Support the ongoing compliance with CQC regulatory standards. To analyse complex patient safety and compliance data and make recommendations to Trust and Divisional Business Units to address identified deficits in safety and/or compliance and ensuring agreed actions are followed through.
Follow through on information obtained from staff reporting patient safety related incidents and ensure that immediate actions are taken to minimise any risks to patients. Policy Develop, implement and monitor patient safety policies and procedures affecting all service lines, and support the development of the Trusts patient safety culture and safety systems to enhance patient safety and experience. Maintain an up-to-date and comprehensive knowledge of local and national patient safety issues, including the interpretation of national health policies to ensure that goals and standards are reflected in the trusts programme of work. To contribute to wider Trust strategy and policy development.
Financial To act as an authorised signatory for delegated budgets and to ensure effective financial management. Information Resources Represent the Trust at regional/national level on patient safety, developing partnerships, sharing best practice and integrating this into knowledge within the Trust. Attendance and/or present oral/written reports to Board and other senior managers in the Trust and to take responsibility for relevant actions as agreed at the meeting with a key responsibility for Patient Safety. To ensure all patient identifiable information regarding patient safety issues is protected to comply with Trust data protection policies and the Data Protection Act.
Ensure that there are robust systems in place to engage the participation of all clinicians and associated health care professionals in patient safety. Is responsible for the identification and issuing of patient safety alerts to the Trust. Acting for the Trust to gain assurance in relation to patient safety alerts. Research and Development The Patient Safety Specialist is key in supporting work to make patient safety a core element of training for every member of staff in their organisation.
Responsible for securing funding for the development of programmes and activities which support patient safety across the whole organisation. The postholder will carry out research and development work for programmes or activities being undertaken within the Trust. Develop system and organisational metrics and outcome measures to monitor the impact of safety initiatives and programmes of work. Horizon scan relevant national / local policy, legislation, reports etc.
