We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and versatile individual to join the Trust as an Apprentice Secretary in the Gastroenterology Department. Our Gastroenterology department is split up into sub-specialities and further sub-specialities within these: Hepatology/Pancreatic; Nutrition;InflammatoryBowel Disease (IBD).

You will work as part of a busy team and respect and integrity are an essential part of the ethos of working together that drives our department. This is a busy role with varying demands, so building an effective rapport with colleagues and being ready to take their guidance and offer your support will be really important.

We are very proud of our Apprentice success rates, with 92% of Apprentices successfully obtaining a substantive post within the Trust at the end of their Apprenticeship contract, and 98% of Apprentices having further plans in place following their Apprenticeship e.g. going on to further education, joining the NNUH staff bank or obtaining employment at another organisation.

Our secretaries act as a point of contact for all communications between the Consultant, patients, relatives, all hospital staff, General Practitioners and their staff and outside agencies, maintaining a close working relationship between Consultants and patients as appropriate.

**Apprenticeship Eligibility Criteria**:
**All applicants must be**:

- Aged 16+
- Resident in the UK/EEA for the last three consecutive years
- Must not be in any form of formal government-funded education upon the start of their apprenticeship

**Qualifications and Skills Required**:

- Good general standard of education
- Good standard of literacy and numeracy
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Good IT skills

**Full time**: 37.5 hours per week

- Deal efficiently and effectively with direct and indirect (i.e. telephone) enquires from patients, all levels of medical and nursing staff, GPs, Social Services and other health professionals and staff. Respond to enquiries, providing routine and non-routine information and non-clinical advice, resolving problems where possible. Communicate appropriately with patients who may be fearful, aggressive or have sensitive concerns needing reassurance and who may present difficulties in communication e.g. terminally ill patients, deaf patients, mentally ill patients and elderly confused patients.
- Assist patients and their carers by arranging translation/interpretation facilities via INTRAN.
- Accurately transcribe all correspondence by touch typing from audio dictation using knowledge of medical terminology. Generate routine and non-routine correspondence independently.
