About this opportunity

As a Benefits Officer you will be required to work across the Council's Benefit Team providing accurate and timely processing of all types of Housing Benefit and Council Tax reduction claims to support customers on a low income. You will be required to have a detailed understanding of relevant Benefit processes, regulations and legislation together with other welfare benefits. You will provide an excellent customer service both face to face and on the telephone.

You will be expected to

  • Process new applications received for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction including supported accommodation, self-employed, students and persons from abroad
  • Process with all changes of circumstances reported to the service, ensuring cases are updated accurately and in a timely manner
  • Manage and resolve complex cases, taking ownership through to completion
  • Ensure overpayments of Housing Benefit are recovered in line with policies and procedures
  • Liaise with internal departments and external organisations to resolve cases in a professional and timely manner
  • Work with the Team Leader to promote new ways of working and to support and develop others within the team
  • Support the Team Leader in the operational management of the service as required.

    You will be able to demonstrate
    • Extensive knowledge and experience of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction legislation and of working in a local authority benefits environment, with a proven ability to understand and comply with those regulations and associated legislation
    • Proven ability to work with minimum supervision to achieve specified targets and standards, plan and prioritise workload and respond effectively to rapidly changing circumstances
    • Knowledge of Academy/Northgate Revenues and Benefits systems and the Enterprise document management system
    • Experience in dealing with customers in a range of different circumstances in writing, face to face and on the telephone.
