The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Mental Health Mission (MHM) funding specifically includes the Midlands Translational Centre delivered by the University of Birmingham Institute for Mental Health. This centre aims to use cutting edge experimental medicine and biomarker discovery to accelerate new treatments for patients living with mental illness, develop robust research infrastructure and re-engage industry. The centre will increase capacity in mental health research through providing relevant training and creating better systems to support industry-led research and investment across the UK. Specific focus will be paid to addressing areas of unmet need and high burden of mental illness.

We are seeking to appoint a full-time/part-time (to be agreed with successful candidate) Clinical Research Fellow to support the delivery of the MHM Midlands Translational Centre (MHMTC), conduct research and work within a growing team of translational researchers. The post will be employed by the University of Birmingham and will support the establishment of an Early Psychosis Research Clinic focusing on At-Risk Mental State (ARMS) and Children and Young People trials. The post holder will work closely with the Institute for Mental Health (IMH) and the MHMTC at the University of Birmingham, and also the Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital NHS Trust.

Main Duties

  • The candidate will consolidate and develop personal knowledge and practical skills as appropriate within the research portfolio. Depending on research level this may include literature synthesis, protocol writing and development, data collection, data science, embedding research structures into clinical provision, developing and maintaining knowledge about research assessments and conduct.
  • Maintain a high standard of personalised care for all patients, by ensuring that you and team members always act in accordance with GMC guidance.
  • Maintain GCP training.
  • Develop skills in disseminating findings of research projects through publication and presentation. The post holder will be supported to do this as a key outcome of the role.

Person Specification

Essential

  • MBBS Degree
  • Full General Medical Council Registration with a Licence to Practice.
  • Strong interest in mental health disorders
  • Understanding and experience of research methods and processes.
  • Strong knowledge of Good Clinical Practice
  • Analytical and problem solving capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information with clarity, both verbally and in writing
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to get on well with colleagues
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work towards departmental and Institute objectives
  • Excellent IT skills

Desirable

  • Experience of Psychiatry
  • Experience of clinical trials
