We are inviting applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow position (start date January 1st 2025) to work in School of Psychology at the University of Birmingham. The successful candidate will work on a 2-year project, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, aimed at studying the benefits of language exposure for language processing in healthy older adults. This will be done under direct supervision of Dr. Katrien Segaert and in collaboration with Dr. Evelien Heyselaar (Radboud University, The Netherlands) and Prof. Linda Wheeldon (University of Agder, Norway).

Role Summary

Research focus: Research on language decline in ageing is important and timely: language is a core aspect of human cognition and our research has demonstrated that healthy older adults experience decline in several aspects of their language function. The aim of the project is to examine the mechanisms underlying decline in language production and to use that knowledge to ameliorate this decline. Theories of language production currently link the mechanisms for sentence production to implicit learning, driving syntactic priming effects. Research demonstrates that key features of these effects are persistence over time and generalizability (for useful theoretical background, see ). The postdoctoral student will set up experiments to compare the effects of different language training protocols in healthy older adults, with the aim of increasing the persistence of priming effects, thereby increasing diversity of language use.

The candidate will be involved in all stages of designing and conducting experiments, will be expected to prepare the results for and contribute to high quality academic publications, to present at national and international academic conferences, and engage in public engagement activities. The expectation is that the postdoctoral researcher will be the first author on several publications.

  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Analyse and interpret data
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
  • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
  • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods

Person Specification

  • First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
  • High level analytical capability
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
