Full Time, Fixed Term contract up to 12 months

Background

We seek to hire a research fellow who will perform direct numerical simulation and large-eddy simulation of hydrogen and hydrogen/hydrocarbon premixed flames to explore the flame instabilities and develop predictive models for hydrogen-rich flame dynamics at high-pressure. The research fellow will be working as part of a team both within the school of engineering at the University of Birmingham and with external collaborators. Research success is expected to result in impactful publications in major scientific journals and widespread recognition within the international scientific research community, as well as relevant contributions to the long-term energy and environmental and high-performance computing of gaseous turbulent chemically reactive flows.

Role Summary

  • Work within specified research grants and projects.
  • Operate within area of specialism.
  • Analyse and interpret research findings and results, disseminating the results and writing scientific papers in top journals.
  • Work with experimental collaborators, communicating the data and the results, presenting them in project meetings.
  • Developing strategy and tools for effective computations and post-processing the results.

Main Duties

  • Develop research objectives with assistance of a mentor if required.
  • Analyse and interpret data.
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
  • Provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate.
  • Contribute to developing new models, techniques, and methods.
  • Undertake management/administration arising from research.
  • Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews.
  • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters.
  • Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research.
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines.
  • Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.

Person Specification

  • PhD (or one near to completion) in mechanical engineering or closely related areas.
  • DNS and LES modelling of chemically reactive turbulent combustion.
  • Experience in using and developing codes with OpenFOAM.
  • Extensive CFD experience using high-performance computations.
  • A strong background in CFD modelling of turbulence, combustion, chemical kinetics, numerical algorithms, and computational science are highly desirable.
  • High level analytical capability.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly.
  • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones.
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively.
  • Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project.
  • Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort.
