Recovery Support Worker

The RAMHP team is a new Southwest London & St Georges Mental Health (SWLSTG) service that aims to improve the mental health of people sleeping rough in the five boroughs which make up SWLTSG.

The project will develop close operational working links with other advocacy and support services in the non-profit sector and will enhance, fill gaps, build bridges between services, and help existing services work together more effectively so that homeless people are rapidly identified, assessed, supported, and directed so that their recovery is sustained.

RAMHP is designed to complement, strengthen, and enhance existing provision.

This post is funded by NHS England's Longer Term Plan funding stream.

The RAMHP project fits the priorities for the Greater London Authority's action plan for homelessness by working to:

  • Minimise the flow of new rough sleepers onto the streets
  • Ensure that no one new to the streets sleeps rough for a second night
  • Ensure no one returns to sleep on the streets of London
  • Tackle rough sleeping by nonUK nationals
  • Improve partnership working around enforcement
  • Improve outcomes for people discharged from hospital or prison
  • Meet the physical and mental health needs of rough sleepers
  • Improve access to mental health services
  • Ensure the availability of appropriate accommodation, including emergency accommodation
  • Maintain and improve the collection and use of data about sleeping rough
This is an 18-month fixed term post based in the Rough Sleepers Mental Health Project (RAMHP) Team. The Team covers Merton, Wandsworth, Sutton, Kingston, and Richmond


The post holder will work with people who are rough sleepers who are experiencing mental health problems who may have co-occurring, alcohol, and drug problems.

They will support the wider MDT and local homeless outreach services to deliver interventions that support and promote recovery e.g.

ADL skills, physical health monitoring and accessing physical health services, self management strategies and support to develop coping strategies, gain access to health promotion.


This role requires someone with drive, energy and a commitment to high performance standards and the delivery of patient centred care.

The post holder will ideally have experience working with rough sleepers and/or people with co-occurring mental health alcohol and drug problems.

You will need to have excellent communication skills, be pro-active and able to work autonomously.

Working autonomously within the parameters of the role leading on

implementing the delivery of quality nursing care, contributing to the physical, psychological, social, recreational and spiritual care in a recovery-focused way through therapeutic engagement and activities, and taking steps to address any issues that arise.


Leading on and undertaking activities to ensure that the fundamentals of care are met - nutrition, hydration, hygiene, comfort, emotional and social support.


Subject to the requirements of a particular service area and within the confines of the role, following trust policy/government regulatory guidance and upon successful completion of an approved programme of study and competency assessment signed by ward manager for the clinical area, the post-holder will administer routine medications.

Supporting and ensuring the day-to-day smooth running of the clinical area.
This will include coordinating and prioritising activities.

Demonstrating an enhanced understanding of Mental Health signs and
symptoms and an understanding of how these may present in practice
including recognition of impact on patient presentation and behaviour including risk factors.

Supporting junior staff to develop understanding of mental health signs and symptoms and develop appropriate responses to these in practice.
