About the role:

The British Museum is looking for a Finance Manager: Tax and Technical to line manage and develop the VAT and tax team and to plan and deliver a series of improvement and automation/simplification projects. You will oversee preparation of returns to our key stakeholders, for example HMRC, provide technical guidance on issues such as VAT, PAYE, gift aid and foreign tax to the finance team and other departments within the Museum, and build resilience in the VAT and tax team and wider finance teams to support these areas. You will oversee management of the investments and systems administration for the Museum's accounting system.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Develop tax and VAT strategy, and advise on related issues
  • Advise on the tax implications of projects and new initiatives
  • Lead simplification review and advise on measures to improve efficiency
  • Oversee the preparation of VAT, tax, customs and payroll-related returns
  • Supervise monthly checks on the payroll file to ensure that staff are paid accurately and on time
  • Review procedures and undertake analysis to ensure that the Museum and all entities are compliant with HMRC guidance and legislation
  • Oversee investment management and reporting
  • Train team members and the wider Museum on VAT and tax matters
  • Provide information, analysis and returns to other bodies such as DCMS, the Office for National Statistics, and for internal purposes.

About you:

  • A Levels or equivalent
  • Qualified accountant – ACA, ACCA or other
  • Excellent technical knowledge of regulatory framework, corporation tax, payroll taxes and VAT, and of relevant accounting standards
  • Experience of charity VAT including partial exemption VAT returns
  • Excellent excel skills
  • Ability to explain complex rules to members of the finance team and other departments
  • Ability to work under pressure, identify and resolve complex problems, and prioritise workload effectively.
