About the role:

Assistant Collection Managers in the Loans & Display team are responsible for all practical aspects of care and preservation of the British Museum collection with a primary focus on the framing, packing and display of 2D works.

The post holder will work as part of a specialist framing team, and their activities will include the storage, movement and preparation of 2D works for loans and display and may take place across all Museum sites.

Assistant Collection Managers may also be responsible for the packing, handling and display of other objects lent to venues in the UK and internationally.

This role is primarily technical. Problem solving is a key aspect of the role, and a flexible approach to working is essential.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • To observe best practice in all aspects of object handling and collection storage.
  • To facilitate the movement, packing and display of 2D works and objects across the collection.
  • To use tools and workshop equipment in the delivery of framing, frame making, object packing and installation activity.
  • To construct frames and frame artworks both permanently and temporarily for loan.
  • To observe health and safety standards for activities and equipment.
  • To carry out and complete condition reports for objects
  • To monitor the security of objects and to maintain them in good condition in storage, in transit and whilst on display.
  • To follow Integrated Pest Management procedures.
  • To act as courier on UK and international loans and carry out any Known Consigner training and duties as required.

About you:

  • Experience of framing, installation and packing 2D artworks is essential.
  • Demonstrable interest in aspects of the Museum's collections,
  • Manual dexterity; IT skills; understanding and appreciation of materials and objects.
  • Ability to work well as part of team; self-motivated and able to use initiative; good communicator.
  • Museum or gallery work; object or art handling and installation
  • Practical experience of hand tools and workshop equipment.
  • familiarity with databases; full UK driving licence; forklift licence
