About the role:

The British Museum is recruiting for a Senior Finance Assistant: VAT and Compliance who will support the tax team in preparing VAT returns and ensure compliance with other regulatory requirements.  You will also provide technical support for the Museum's accounting system.  

You will work across all Museum departments within our Operations and Collections and Public Engagement Divisions.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Provide technical support for the Museum’s accounting system.  
  • Ensure that monthly/quarterly statutory returns are submitted in a timely manner.
  • Review and check the monthly payroll file in accordance with the timetable to ensure that staff are paid accurately and on time.
  • Monitor and review the Museum’s HMRC VAT prepayment accounts.
  • Ensure that monthly payroll, pension and other statutory payments are paid on time.
  • Perform journals and balance sheet account reconciliations, monthly, quarterly and annually.

About you:

To be successful in this role, you will have –

  • 5 GCSE’s or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of straightforward accounting principles and procedures.
  • Previous exposure to UK VAT and tax procedures.
  • IT literate with good data input and spreadsheet skills.
  • Experience of working in a finance department.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
