The Christie hospital urology cancer service is one of the largest in Europe, proving care to a population of over 8 million people. An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a well-established surgical urology nursing team as the team leader.
We are looking for an experienced, dynamic advanced clinical nurse specilaist who is passionate about the patient experience and the delivery of quality patient-focused care. You will work closely with the wider nursing team, operational manager, and lead clinicians to improve operational efficiency and enhance the urology cancer patient experience.
You will demonstrate highly developed specialist knowledge and skills and provide personalised support and advice to patients undergoing treatment for urology cancer. You will be responsible for leading and delivering clinical nursing services for patients undergoing urology cancer treatment, as well as leading on co-ordinating and improving the pathways of care across organisational, professional and geographical boundaries, both autonomously and as part of a highly valued member of the urology surgical and oncology team.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be an experienced urology/oncology/surgical nurse and be highly motivated and driven to improve patient care and experience. You will be an excellent communicator and will have the opportunity to use your clinical and professional leadership skills to encourage and promote best outcomes for patients, their relatives, and carers. Excellent interpersonal skills are paramount for this post together with confidence to engage and work with a range of colleagues at all levels and from all professional groups.

The successful applicant will have experience and knowledge of treatment pathways and specialist care for urology cancer patients and must be able to demonstrate sound leadership skills and evidence of personal and professional development.

Clinical
1. To provide comprehensive and specialist assessment such as holistic needs assessment and care planning for patients with a range of highly complex presentations, by utilising advanced clinical reasoning, evidenced based knowledge, investigative and analytical skills and specialist assessment techniques.
2. Plan, implement and evaluate care delivery both physical and psychological according to changing health care needs to ensure continuity of effective patient care and considers inclusivity and personalisation.
3. To communicate complex clinical findings to the patient/cares to gain valid informed consent prior to any intervention or procedure.
4. To work within a legal framework for those patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.
5. Through visible leadership, ensure that the delivery of kind, compassionate and respectful care takes place and that the Clinical Nurse Specialist Team develop relationships with patients that involve better listening and decision making.
6. Ensure the maintenance of professional contemporaneous records at all times, document all actions and interventions in a clear, honest and timely manner in line with Trust policy.
7. Collect, collate, evaluate and report information, Involve patients and carers/relatives in the planning and delivery of care and development of services to enhance the patient/carer experience.
8. Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure patient needs are met, especially in relation to ongoing care needs and discharge arrangements. Ensure the introduction of end of treatment summaries/ letter to enhance the patient/carers understanding of their treatment. This may encompass primary, secondary and other tertiary care providers.
9. Develop effective teamwork, to ensure that the delivery of patient care is reviewed as part of a multidisciplinary team.
10. Deal with concerns raised by patients and carers in a proactive manner, review patient feedback results and update patient experience improvement plans as needed.
11. Champion a safeguarding culture, which meets the needs of people with issues involving mental capacity or children.
12. Ensure patients, relatives and other staff are received in a professional manner and act in a courteous and polite manner at all times, thereby ensuring good public relations between patients, public and staff.
13. Use advanced communication skills in a variety of settings.
14. To have an advanced knowledge of local and national standards that may impact on practice.
15. Ensure care supports all clinical quality external accreditation and legal frameworks, for example Care Quality Commission (CQC) essential standards.

Managerial & Leadership
1. Ensure nursing practices comply with Trust procedural documents.
2. To ensure the Trusts risk management policy is appropriately utilised within the department.
3. Manage the service when on duty with overall clinical responsibility and lead a team of specialist nurses, to carry out delivery of care to a complex group of patients.
4. Develop the team, ensuring a learning environment, leading by example and to be aware of the effect of change upon all bands of staff.
5. Ensure the health and safety of all staff, patients, and carers, reporting any incidents, hazards or defects and taking responsibility to minimise risk. To implement action plans to ensure improvement is an incident has occurred. At all times adhering to and ensuring adherence to Trust policies and procedures.
6. Lead improvement/ transformation projects as indicated by local and national initiatives.
7. Deploy staff to ensure safe and appropriate care is always given. This includes the approval of leave and working hours, anticipating problems where they exist and taking local/timely actions as appropriate.
8. As a line manager, take responsibility for human resource issues including appraisal, personal development, sickness absence, disciplinary and grievance, recruitment and selection personal career development delegating as appropriate.
9. Ensure all complaints both formal and informal are dealt with promptly and courteously in accordance with Trust policy.
10. Actively lead and participate in local and Trust meetings proactively seeking to improve patients experience and feeding back relevant information to the team.
11. Meet regularly with the ACN or Lead Nurse to monitor clinical care, finance/resources and HR issues ensuring clear communication pathways.
12. With the ACN, operational team and finance managers work closely to achieve financial balance.

14. Promote patient and public involvement activities in the specialist area, leading to service improvement.
Education & Development .
