We are seeking a dynamic Respiratory consultant to fill this replacement post and join the Leeds Integrated COPD specialist services at St James's University Hospital. The appointees will become key members of a dedicated and highly experienced multidisciplinary team. In addition to COPD, other specialist interests can be considered and maybe be able to be accommodated.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust makes up one of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe housing over 2,000 beds and providing a range of general, acute and elective services, together with a significant number of regional and supra-regional specialties. The department of Respiratory Medicine has undergone significant modernisation over recent years and remains a centre for clinical and educational excellence. Inpatient services are provided in Gledhow Wing at St Jamess Hospital. This includes three Respiratory wards, an NIV / Weaning unit, a dedicated CF ward, a procedures room, Sleep services and a Nurse-led day unit. There are cross city outpatient facilities including a dedicated chest clinic at Leeds General Infirmary. The unit has a strong commitment to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research.

Main duties of the job

The job is a full-time post comprising of 10 PAs with supervision of the junior doctors and specialist nurses. There will also be an on-call commitment to cover the Respiratory medicine medical rota on a 1:12 basis, contribute to the Acute Medicine rota 1:17 and contribute 0.7PA to work flexibly to support General Internal Medicine.

The appointee must hold the Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom, or equivalent, and have completed higher specialist training in Respiratory Medicine.

Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.

The Leeds COPD Integrated Service

The Leeds Integrated COPD Service is a Consultant led Service in collaboration between Respiratory Medicine at Leeds Teaching Hospitals and the Community Respiratory Team at Leeds Community Health Trust. Our aim is to provide accessible, excellent, COPD specialist care across Leeds including quality assured diagnosis & proactive disease management.

The service delivers a wide range of activities including delivering COPD care bundle, maintaining best practice standards in acute management of COPD through participation in the National COPD Audit, COPD, Palliative and emphysema MDTs, Home Oxygen Service, Respiratory Home Ward in the Community, Alpha 1 - antitrypsin deficiency, Home NIV, Pulmonary Rehabilitation & Specialist COPD outpatient Clinics.

2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

The successful candidate would join the other 2 consultants in the team. They are expected to work closely with the current multidisciplinary team to sustain current capacity of the Leeds Integrated COPD services with a view to expand in the near future, ensure the smooth flow from diagnosis to treatment & follow up, including developing innovative ways of working to sustain increasing patient load, contribute to the Respiratory & Acute Medicine on call rota.

Perform bronchoscopies & pleural procedures

To take an active role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching

Active participation in research within the department.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

MB BS or equivalent qualification. MRCP or equivalent qualification. Certificate of completion of Specialist training in Respiratory and General Medicine or CESR or equivalent. Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice. YOU MUST STATE YOUR GMC NUMBER IN YOUR APPLICATION IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE ROLE. Eligibility to work in the UK. Is up to date and fit to practise safely.

Relevant higher degree.

Training, Research, Teaching & Audit
Essential

Should have completed a recognised training programme in Respiratory Medicine and General (Internal) Medicine. Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research. Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors. Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.

Desirable

Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff. Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
