Job summary

We are excited to advertise for TWO enthusiastic Year 2 or 3 Pharmacy students to undertake NIHR Undergraduate Internship Programme. The NIHR Undergraduate Internship Programme is a scheme designed to engage and attract students in the early stages of their academic studies to consider a career in health and social care research. These internships are part of collaborative project between Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and University of Bradford. The placements are funded through the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) award.

The 6-week internships will be supervised by Dr Kristina Medlinskiene (Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust) and Dr Justine Tomlinson (University of Bradford).

During the internship you will be involved with NIHR funded national studies conducted at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust that focus on medication prescribing for older patients (, deprescribing, improving adherence, care at transitions). You will also have opportunity to be part of research projects conducted by Consultant or Advanced Practice Pharmacists and gain insight in their roles. Furthermore, you will have an opportunity to meet wider pharmacy team, including pharmacy technicians and pharmacists. You will gain understanding how important research is for clinical practice, pharmacy team development, and how it can be embedded into clinical practice.

Main duties of the job

We will support and provide training to complete the assigned research project tasks. Alongside your project work, we will offer you a range of experiential activities to develop your knowledge of research and clinical academic careers.

You will be linked to research projects delivered at HUTH, thus you will be exposed and involved to a varied extent in the following activities:

See the process of setting up the study at HUTH site. Identification of eligible patients Consent of patients eligible for the study (supervised and unsupervised, if appropriate) Work with the site Principal Investigator in producing reports. As the studies will be non-IMP (drug) trial, the intern will have opportunity to spend time with pharmacy clinical trials team to understand how clinical trials of IMPs are delivered in hospitals and what the role of the pharmacy team is. Spend time at the University of Bradford as part of the internship to learn the process of research development and delivery from an academic side. Collection of data via different data collection methods. Observe work conducted by Principal Investigator and Research Nurses. Attend research related meeting locally, regionally, and nationally. Completing data analysis. Production of data analysis summaries and reports. Discussing the importance of patient and public involvement with the UoB service user group. Completing NIHR/RPS Research modules and NIHR INCLUDE e-learning.

The intern will be expected to achieve the following learning objectives:

Understand the process of setting up a research study at a recruiting site (, Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust). Understand the process of patient recruitment (identification and consent) at a recruiting site. Understand how the research fits within clinical and academic careers. Learn how data analysis is undertaken of the collected research data. Understand the governance process of a research study. 6. Produce brief reports of the study to the local clinical teams. Understand the roles of different research team members, site Principal Investigator, pharmacist, research nurse, Research & Development team. Produce presentation summarising their learning experience during the internship.

Please note that this advertised vacancy does not meet the UKVI eligibility requirements for a Skilled Worker Visa and therefore HUTH would not be able to issue a
