Job Purpose Summary

Great opportunity for a Business Intelligence developer to join NatureScot’s Information Management and Cyberteam to implement reporting solutions that enables and supports the aims of the organisation.

The Information Management & Cyber Team oversee the key areas of Information Management compliance for the organisation. We have specialist staff who are qualified and highly experienced in their relative fields (FOI/EIR, GDPR, SAR, Records Management, Librarianship, Data Management, Business Continuity, Business Intelligence and Cyber Security).

As a BI Developer you will work with the Business Intelligence Manager and work initially with the People and OD team (POD) to develop people analytics derived from our oracle fusion instance.

Roles at this grade will typically work autonomously or as part of a team to provide specialist advice and technical expertise with some autonomous decision making. The range of tasks can be varied and will therefore require a well-developed understanding of a complex body of knowledge in their chosen field or specialist area. As a consequence, planning and organising of own workload is required to deliver the corporate priorities. There maybe line management responsibilities in this role. The role is required to evaluate different approaches, problem solve and provide a range of solutions. 

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Establish relationships with a wide range of stake holders to support the delivery of the corporate priorities to advice, influence in their subject matter expertise. Communicate, using appropriate styles, methods, and timing, including digital channels, to maximise understanding and impact Subject specific expertise on policy/strategy development, be alert to emerging issues and trends which might impact, or benefit own and teams’ work. Find ways to improve systems and structures to deliver more streamlined resources. Recognise patterns and trends in a wide range of evidence/data and draw key conclusions, costs, benefits, risks, and potential responses. Line management responsibilities for example prioritising, organising, and monitoring other people’s work. Identify and develop team members to support succession planning, coaching, mentoring, and developing others. Assist POD with the development of any reporting around people data in their chosen reporting solution (Oracle Analytics, Splash BI or Power BI) Produce quality reports and dashboards using Microsoft Power BI for various departments across the organisation. Maintain, monitor, and improve reports for various stakeholders. Evaluate and make recommendations on best practices or technologies that would enhance the organisations BI capabilities.

Generic Role Requirements

Demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the main areas of responsibilities associated with this role gained through working in a similar role OR a Degree or equivalent professional qualification, SVQ level 5 and 6. Applies knowledge to achieve set objectives with limited guidance. Written and verbal communication skills with the ability to advice and influence. Demonstrate accuracy with both numeracy and literacy skills. Working knowledge of relevant systems, equipment, processes, and procedures including standard software packages, with limited use of non-standard software. Effective planning, organising, and prioritising and familiarity with own priorities and those of colleagues. Understanding of policies and legislation and procedures relevant to this role and remains aware of technical, policy and procedural developments.  Use precedent for guidance and understands requirements of the role and current policies. Understanding of health and safety policies and procedures relevant to this role, and the quality outputs and standards required.  Demonstrate customer service / interpersonal / team working skills.  Any other reasonable task assigned.

Specific Role Requirements

Assist POD with the development of any reporting around people data in their chosen reporting solution (Oracle Analytics, Splash BI or Power BI). Build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders and subject matter experts. Work with Stakeholders and subject matter experts to gather reporting requirements. Produce quality reports and dashboards using Power BI for various areas of the organisation from both on premise and cloud data sources. Work with the BI Manager to develop data warehouse / lake.

Person Specification

Essential Skills (Please refer to these in your supporting statement)

Proficient with BI technologies (Ideally Microsoft Power BI) with understanding of database management systems and ETL (Extract transform load) framework. Proficient in DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) Proficient in data modelling. Excellent understanding of Relational Database Design Strong logical and problem-solving skills. Proven ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with stakeholders to manage expectations, with an ability to scope requirements to evolve initial data and requests into an effective proposition fulfilling customer needs.  Experience of working in a dynamic, flexible, and fast paced environment, managing sensitive/confidential data, and working to tight deadlines.  Ability to coach, mentor and develop colleagues with regards to management intelligence and data leveraging great communication and teamwork skills  Confident facilitating detailed collaborative workshops with established cross-functional teams. 

Desirable Skills

Data science background with the ability to build new tools and approaches for enhanced data collection.  Experience in using SQL or other querying languages. Cloud Technologies and cloud infrastructure Infrastructure as code experience (Terraform) Data warehousing and data lake experience Experience of using Oracle Fusion HR system (HCM)
